In attempts to acquire everything cool I want before the communist in my state made everything illegal I decided my newest addition would be an FAL I have always loved the looks and had previously owned a fixed stock DSA STG58 about 15 years ago. It was alright and being young and poor I traded it off. I have always wanted a para FAL and decided on a SA58 para Congo 18” barrel. The rifle arrived at my dealer and today I picked it up. First impressions are 95% more on that later, however the fit and finish seem very nicely machined and finished. Mags are the weak point at this point in time so I ordered 6 new production DSA metal mags they arrived yesterday and I unwrapped them today and test fit them into the rifle all were snug but I didn’t have to beat them into place and they lock up nice and tight. I loaded one to 20 rounds and inserted it into the rifle with the bolt locked to the rear. I pressed the bolt release and it failed to chamber the round with the bullet getting hung up on the feed ramp. I pulled the charging handle fully to the rear and it finished chambering. I ejected the live round and it had a few gouges on the bullet and case I tried again and the second bullet chambered fine from the right side of the mag. Hopefully this smooths out with live fire or I may try and smooth it out a little bit. |

I bought my FAL used, and it works well. But, a guy I shoot with liked mine and he bought a NIB DSA version. His was not feeding well first trip out. We were using cheap (used to be) surplus ammo. Popped it open and hardly any lube in there. Lubed it well, worked the action a bunch. More lube. Loaded and it just ran fine. |

I’ll have to pay attention next time I get the FAL out and see if my ammo is getting scratched up. Probably is from the mag lips, they can be sharp. At least yours isn’t a ban baby like mine. Was finally able to make it to the range today I’m not a 100 yard group shooter so while I was zeroing my ptr at 36ish yards I checked to see where the sights were Shooting this from the bench is difficult to trigger makes my HK clones seem like they have SSA but I was surprised to see it was dead on. I loaded one round at a time and got the gas adjusted until it locked back and then proceeded to shoot from 7,25, and 75 yards standing rapid with zero issues. At approximately the 70 round mark I opened the gas one click and had a fail to eject I clicked it back and it ran with zero issues. Overall I fired 100 rounds of pmc xtac with zero issues outside of the user induced one. I found the rifle to have more recoil than the PTR I was shooting but the recoil impulse was more enjoyable and the ergonomics are certainly much better. I have 6 DSA metal mags and 5 surplus mags and each of them got at least a few rounds to try out. The last 60 rounds I fired were from three DSA fully loaded and they fed perfectly. Eventually I’ll build this into an African game warden build I already have the burlap and spray paint but i want to get some more rounds though it before I paint it. |

One note on the DSA mags they are tighter than the surplus but not terrible to insert or remove and I can see the finish wear from inserting and removing and they are loosening up Initially I had very rough feeding and discovered various burrs and nicks on the feed lips. I sanded them down and they feed flawless now Having to work on $35 brand new mags isn’t ideal but their isn’t very many options at this point and at least I got them smoothed out with minimal work. |
