With all the NFA riles about SBRs, SBSs & Suppressors, I am confused.

Building a GAU-5A and want to SBR it, but I do not know if Form 1s are still needed.

Any help?

TIA...

The ruling is NOT a SCOTUS ruling so it only applies to the plaintiffs and the district for which the court resides.

Same rules apply to you

Being in Michigan, you have a question of your state's law.

Making an SBR is illegal in MI, unless the SBR "...is lawfully made, manufactured, transferred, or possessed under federal law."

Now the question becomes, will the MI government accept being a plaintiff of the recent cases and making an SBR without a form one as "made under federal law?"

The problem is, at this moment, the path to filing a Form 1 and registering an SBR under the NFA law does still exist, so it's up to whether or not MI will accept the ruling from the federal lawsuit as a bypass to their law.

Honestly, I would seek council with an attorney in MI well versed in firearms law, and/or wait until the MI government says if it would qualify for the exemption or not before making an SBR without a form 1.

incorrect. Anyone in other states outside the court's district can join one (or more) of the plaintiff organizations and reap the benefits of the ruling.

Question.  In Texas, theoretically, could i legally take a shotgun I currently own and cut down the bbl shorter than 18.5" with no engraving or other paperwork?

ETA: Would it be more prudent, if an option, to document when you did the cutting in the event Dems later get SBS back on the NFA?

The states listed in the injunction are only there for their state agencies, not for their citizens.  An individual still has to be a member of one of the covered plaintiff organizations, and only certain plaintiffs are covered for engraving.

There’s a whole 128 page thread on the new ruling.

If the Dems come back and put things back on the NFA, any documentation you have won’t matter.  I wouldn’t bother.

It is my understanding that only the Jensen Plaintiffs got relief from marking requirements.

See last page of the ruling.

Could a resident of a state that doesn't allow NFA without federal registration travel to another (non-federal registration required) state and buy a shotgun, and then chop the barrel to less than 18", so long as the short shotgun never leaves the state in which it was purchased?

similarly, could a resident of a state that doesn't allow NFA without registration take an AR pistol to another (non-federal registration required) state and add a stock while in that state, so long as the stock was removed before crossing state lines?

Nothing has changed here in Mi as of yet. Just do a F1.
