I recently started loading up some Garand ammo using M80 bullets and IMR-4895. It’s on the light side, but shoots well. Anyway, while buying some extra clips (that I didn’t need), i got some bandoliers and cardboard covers. I also stumbled across an old 30 cal can marked for clips in bandoliers. You can see where this is going……. 192 rounds, 24 clips, and four bandoliers later…..    Two bandoliers are brass, two nickel. All commercial brass as that’s what I have most of.  I enjoyed “making” this more than I wanted to admit. I’ve got two unopened spam cans of HXP I believe in clips, plus another couple of unopened 30 cal cans so it’s not like I don’t have some factory setups like this. I’ll probably “make” more though as it strangely makes me happy. |

I’ll admit to looking online for how I “should” put the bandoliers in the can. Just got another “bandoliers” marked 30 cal can, but it doesn’t have the cool stencil on the lid. Here’s an excerpt from the Milsurp forum about packing a can: I was taught to pack by ex-WW2 vets ( who pre-date the m9 can , but all my Garand ammo is in them ) . Thier way was to lay four pockets down and fold # 5 and 6 over in layer 2 . Two of the next bandoleer was laid in layer 2 and the remaining 4 in layer 3 . Do the last two the same way . Each bandoleer flipped from previous bandoleer's direction. Each strap was wrapped around it's bandoleer and laid flat across the top. This allowed access to only one bandoleer at a time and only one strap was offered up for grabs and it streached the length of the can. And two different prints of how the military said to do it:   I did it the “four on the bottom and flip two” way from the text. It made the most sense to me. |
