Just grabbed this little guy today and popped a couple rounds through it. I have lever rifles in .22, 44,.357.45lc 45/70 and 30/30 so I wanted something a bit different This thing is really cool. I had some 180 umc which btw is a turd loading. Almost no recoil at all. Like hand it to a 4 year old or a 95 year old type deal. I only got 1220fps which is about 200 more than a g20 in the real world. That ammo is rated 1150 but you will not see that out of a pistol. I hand load for most cartridges and have a unused set of dies for 10mm I plan to order some lose hard cast and work up a good woods load. With the right powder I can take advantage of the 16in barrel shouldn’t have any issue getting a 200g moving in the 1300fps range easily. 10+1 Attached File |

FYI-I ran some Underwood 200 HARDCAST through mine over my garmin this morning and got an average of 1475fps. Same load clocked 1217 out of my Glock 20, didn’t have the Glock 40 with me to try it. I’ll try some of my warmer hand loads next trip. I’m interested in what they’ll do. |

If I could only have one probably the .44mag even though I love them all. It’s a good all around setup being able to run 180/300grain loads. I have 2 45/70 and 3 .44 mag along with 30/30 .22 10mm and .357 |

1484 fps with the underwood 200 hardcast. That’s good for 978 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. Thats pretty potent for 10+1 in a lightweight trapper. For those that don’t hand load the 10mm practice ammo is much cheaper than .44 or .357. Even handholding it uses half the powder etc. I think this ammo makes the rifle much more versatile. At some point down the road I’ll try some heavy 220 subsonic rounds with my obsidian .45 suppressor. |

I mulled over the same decision last year and chose the .44. Compare ballistics of the two out of the short carbines all the rage today. They’re surprisingly close because the .45-70 really needs a longer barrel to burn all the extra powder. The 1894 is also a much shorter and lighter gun, which makes for a delightful gun to carry in hand. Good luck! |
