I want to be able to suppress my SCAR17S. I have a high back pressure can in jail. I have been trying to figure out a more appropriate can for the 17. I have been considering a Sandman S,or maybe a Chimera, and recently the Flow762 Ti. I had been thinking that I would change the gas jet, but am liking the idea of an adjustable gas plug. So, between the SCARburator, and the DiSCARder, I can't decide which one I like better. The SCARburator works by restricting gas flow, which I like because, in my mind, gas port erosion should be less. I don't think that should really be factor for me, because I don't shoot a huge amount of .308. The DiSCARder works by venting excess gas. Does that make the system louder? I really wish both of these had a more subdued color adjustment knob. Are there any informed opinions or tests comparing these two adjustable gas plugs? |

Having owned my SCAR 17 for 10+ years shooting mostly suppressed 2000-3000 rounds or so, I have had zero issues with the factory 16” barrel gas jet while using a Surefire SOCOM suppressor. I would venture to guess that the Sandman would treat you quite well as it is fairly similar to the Surefire with back pressure. I’m sorry but I cannot comment about the two devices you are asking about. I would be biased towards KNS, because they make wonderful products that I own and use for my AKs and Galils. Great people, good company. |

Tested out my new YHM T2 suppressor with my Belgian SCAR 16S (stock 16" barrel, PMM 1.40mm gas jet) using a Rearden FHD / Rearden Atlas combo, and Lake City XM193 from 2002, as well as the KNS Discarder. First the suppressor itself. Pleasantly surprised very good quality/workmanship for such a decent price. Minimal/negligible POI shift on the SCAR and AR15 at 100 yd. For the unsuppressed setting, I found 10 worked the best. At 8, it would fail to feed the next round so I went up 2 settings. I never had a problem afterwards. The T2 is known on the Internet as a "gassy" can. I found it was fine on my DI AR15" carbine-length gas system (no adjustable gas block) but I would get some powder and ammonia smell in my face. Also on the AR I'd hear the sound out of the ejection port (sharp PFSST) When suppressed, the KNS works the best on 5, could go up to 6 if needed. At setting 3, the gun ran fine but it failed to hold the bolt open on the last round. At settings 3-5, the lack of recoil was weird followed by significant sound reduction. Out of curiosity, I ran the KNS at 10 with the YHM T2 and I got some nice whiff of gas kind of like on the AR15. I didn't feel the action/recoil was overly harsh. I also want to comment that my ELCAN 1.5-6 really held its zero as I last zeroed it in 2020 or 2021, even removed the barrel a few times, popped it back in, etc... and first time out on the range it was hitting POA at 100 yd with and without the suppressor. Only problem I had was the Rearden Atlas kept coming loose from the Rearden FHD after shooting. Basically the can would either be totally loose when I checked it, or came off very easily. BLUF: KNS suppressed on #5 with YHM T2 was really pleasant to shoot. Bolt felt super slow, surprised it even cycles at all. Sounded very quiet. I never experienced anything louder from the KNS Discarder venting. If anything the AR15 with standard carbine length gas system was "louder" from the ejection port. I always hear hearing protection (33dB earplugs tightly inserted with 26 dB Peltor Tacticals, or 30 dB Peltor Tactical TEP-300s). |

I really wish both of these had a more subdued color adjustment knob. The Scarburetor basically restricts gas flow like you said. The Gen 3 is real janky in terms of build quality. Part of a roll pin sticking out because he could only get 1 size of roll pin. The knob is super easy to turn though, so its great for the SCAR 20. Gen 4 is coming out soon. KNS Discarder is made much better, like typical KNS products. Nitrided and boron finish. It doesn't restrict gas flow, but rather limits how much gets vented out (by the corner opposite of the ejection port side). Super easy to clean. The knob is harder to turn and I always somehow turn it the opposite direction of where I want it to go because I keep thinking I am turning the numbers and the indicator is fixed. When I went to clean my SCAR after shooting it suppressed, the lower and upper had a lot more powder/carbon residue than in the past but that's expected with a suppressor. I've had my 16S for 13+ years and put a few thousand rounds through it, so I am familiar with how dirty/clean it should be. That said, it wasn't terrible and the residue wiped off. I also bought the Mototech 3-select, which I feel on paper is the better solution. In reality, how often are we going to be fiddling with numbers on a dial. It'd be easier to flick between 3 settings like the OE gas regulator setup. I just never got around to testing the Scarburetor or 3-select. The Discarder worked real well and everyone seems to like it. Others have had issues with the Scarburetor not working as intended. Jay from Pew Science tested the Scarburetor against the Discarder. He liked the Discarder better. He felt the Scarburetor was like being lazy and not trying to change gas jets but to rely on the Scarburetor. |
