Prior to shooting, all I did was degrease the gas system and bbl interior. Aside from that I fired it straight out of the box. Only had time for 30rds this morning.
I started off with 18rds of Federal 1200fps 1-1/8oz #8 and was pleasantly surprised to have only a single failure to eject (and that when attempting to rapid fire).
This was followed by 6rds of S&B max dram 12 pellet #1 buck then 6rds of Fiocchi 1250fps #1 buck (7/8oz, my A300UP is *almost* reliable w/this load), all 12rds were 100% (surprising w/the light Fiocchi load).
Compared to my earlier Shockwave, perceived recoil is still substantial but definitely more manageable. I applied isometric tension when shooting, trying both pressure against the front of the safety strap and just clamping pressure from my support hand. In both cases, I didn't have any trouble aiming over the top of the 990 and getting hits out to 25yds. However, this was too short a range trip to determine which tensioning method I prefer (although you do feel that strap on your index finger when tensioned and you fire!).

I initially wanted to mount a WML at 6 o'clock, but I was concerned my index finger would impact the back of the light due to recoil so I moved it to 11 o'clock and so far that seems workable.
So far, I like the 990 a lot, especially if it turns out to be reliable with the light Fiocchi #1 buck load as recoil is more managable and I can fit 5 in the tube even w/the roll crimp.
Barring any undiscovered fatal defects, it looks like the 990 is going to be the new bedroom gun.

Eternity is coming for us all. It cannot be denied, debated or avoided.
We would do well to ponder how we're going to spend that eternity, because eternity is a long time to be wrong.

I’m seriously looking at the SBS version of this gun…

I've read the stock 990 doesn't take well to being SBS'd, something to do with the gas system being calibrated for non-SBS/brace use.
Supposedly the SPX version addresses that issue.

I'm having a hard time seeing how that would work. Usually a stock lessens the chance of a short stroke

I think the aftershock uses more gas to cycle reliably so when you put a stock on it, it becomes over gassed. The factory sbs version is supposed to correct this. At least thats what mossberg has said at shot show.

That’s what I’ve been hearing too.

I've added a 6rd Esstac card and am toying with adding an XS Big Dot tritium front sight and/or an S&J +1 so I can fit 5-6 shells depending upon crimp.

I've removed the safety strap as it does nothing for me, and I've removed the toothed mag tube spring retainer so now it holds 5+1 of the S&B roll-crimped #1 buck. The downside is I'll have to get into the habit of ensuring the mag tube cap is tightened down after shooting. Still looking into a +1 extension & tritium front sight.

Mossberg just announced a factory sbs 990. I'd imagine that would have the tuning sorted out.

I'm not sure i understand why though. The 990 was completely designed around the birds head grip. Why not sbs a 940? I'd think a 940 sbs would be easier to sort out. Unless everyone just wants to use the magpul stock, which may be.

I have a 940 hunting model. I really like it,  but I'm still undecided if i like it enough that I'd get a self defense model.

The 990 is very neat though. I also have a 590 shockwave. People look at it dunny, but I think its a ton of fun to shoot.

If you already have a functioning regulated short barreled gun it’s probably a lot easier to add a stock vs modifying an existing gun into a SBS. That’s my guess. A stock is the easy button.

Update:
Did another 50rds of mixed bird & buck this morning, functioning was 100%. Loads were the Federal 1200fps 1-1/8oz #8 I like to practice with (same recoil impulse as the S&B 12-pellet #1 buck I like) and the light Fiocchi 7/8oz 9-pellet #1 buck.
I tried the Demonstrated Concepts recoil strap: DC Recoil Strap and reversed the front strap on the 990 so fingers make no contact with the strap edge or screws. I also removed the 2-piece combo spring retainer & cap detent to fit 5+1 of roll-crimped shells (4+1 w/the retainer installed).
I was surprised at how manageable recoil was letting it push back against both straps, even w/o the recommended push-pull technique. However, I couldn't manage the DC technique of shooting as shown in this video:
How to Shoot the Shockwave w/ Demonstrated Concepts

Instead, I used the same technique I used w/my Shockwave of extending out for isometric tension and aiming down the length of the bbl, but deliberately holding low to account for the vertical offset (the hotspot of the Streamlight RM2 makes a great aiming point at close range).
Results were gratifying, I was easily getting quick hits on 5" target cubes out to 15yds and recoil, while definitely present, was not disconcerting in the least. I was also transitioning much faster than w/the Shockwave.

In fact, the only discomfort I experienced was when I simulated grabblng the 990 too quickly to utilize the rear recoil strap and failed to use push-pull. Recoil caused the rear of the trigger guard to impact painfully on the edge of my index finger. Aside from that, there are no aftereffects of so many rds through such a small package.

The remote switch plug on the Streamlight RM2 backed out by the end of the session (not surprising) and the mag tube cap had backed out slightly as well since I removed the spring retainer & detent.
For a powerful & maneuverable niche bump-in-the-night gun, the Aftershock does everything I want it to do w/a surprising lack of shooting discomfort.

ETA: Can't find a tritium front bead/sight that will fit the 990 and still considering a +1 for 6+1 (S&J says their +1 won't work ).

Replaced the Streamlight TLR RM2 with the new TLR RM1 that has the same output (1kL, 22kC) when using their rechargeable battery, or half output using a std CR123.
The shorter length allows placement at 6 o'clock w/no danger of impacting fingers during recoil, the bezel is farther away from the muzzle blast and now the beam is better aligned with the bbl for more accuracy when using the hotspot as an aiming point. Very happy w/the results.

I really want one of this format... but being old and weak would like to know if a 20 ga would be as effective. I know they don't make one in 20 but if it would be a good thing for the ole and weak, i plan on pestering them relentlessly...

IIRC, there are some decent HD loads available in 20, but they can be pricey & hard to find (feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken, anyone).
Fiocchi makes a light 12ga #1 Buck load, 9 pellets instead of the usual 12 (so appx 7/8oz @1250fps), recoil is significantly lighter in the 990 and so far with limited testing (10rds) appears to function 100%.

Did some pattern testing with my fav S&B 12p 1200fps #1 buck load at Parma this morning, results below. This is definitely a short-range weapon, out to 15yds, maybe 20 depending upon the load. On the third 15yd target, all the circled holes are from previous attempts to get a pattern centered on the target. Finally managed it, but I discovered I'm more accurate with snapshots than actually aiming this thing, 3shots rapid fire at the 3 targets at 15yds resulted in an average of 10/12 pellets hitting COM.
The RIO 12p 1325fps #1 patterned about the same but recoil was definitely heavier. I have some light Fiocchi 1200fps 9p #1 buck that has patterned well in other shotguns, maybe more testing is in order. I wonder how FFC would fare.

Tried the Fiocchi 9p #1 buck 1200fps load today, recoil was mild but the tightness of the groups surprised me.

Rio and Academy both make a 9 pellet #1 20 ga.

Brenneke makes a low recoil 3/4 oz 20 ga slug moving around 1350, but expensive.  There's another brand that I used to get from Chattanooga, but didn't bother to fill out the paperwork again when they fired my salesman & told me I had to do everything all over again.  That's much less expensive, sold by the 25 rnd box, similar external ballistics to the Brenneke.  Very controllable in the Maverick 88 Cruiser.
I sell firearms produced by the finest child labor in the world, be it Filipino, Muslim, Mormon, Arizonan, or Texan.
