| I recently acquired a Japanese type 89 knee mortar that has been demilled by cutting a hole in the barrel and a crosspin welded across the bore. I asked on the gunboard forums about how to disassemble it and possibly getting it registered as a DD. I'm being told that even with the hole and crosspin it is still a DD and that it can't be legally demilled or owned unless I am a SOT. I feel like that is bad information, otherwise what is the point of demilling it. I know there are others that have registered DD mortars so I figured I'd ask here and see if anyone know just what the requirements are. |
| There is a firing pin, but it may be broken, I need to get it apart. It's not a fixed firing pin like a traditional mortar, it uses a striker. I'd like to form 1 it, but I want to get it completely apart first to see if there are any unobtainium parts missing or broken that might make it not worthwhile. |

True, I just want to make sure it is worth the effort. I'd hate to form 1 it and then find it is unrepairable. Another thought, what if it were sleeved down with a permanently installed smooth bore 37mm tube? Would that put it in the flare launcher category rather than a DD? |

The barrel is dead. That’s the feature (bore diameter) that makes it a DD. A live cup by itself is a firearm. But it’s no longer NFA if the barrel is dead by drilling a hole the size of the bore in a high pressure area and welding a pin or other obstruction* across the muzzle. *I’ve seen the metal from the bore diameter barrel hole welded in place as the obstruction. OP, file your F1. Just remember that DDs (and MGs) are still taxed. |
