So I had myself pretty well convinced that I don’t need to spend any money on a Mini-30. And then I found a used one locally for about 2/3 the cost of a new one and gave in. Disassembling this thing, it appears to have had a magazine or so shot through it and never fired again. It still has a coating of factory grease on the internals. Score!  So what’s mags are available for these? Factory 20s, obviously. Did Ruger ever make a factory 30-round mag for the Mini-30? Any aftermarket mags any good? My only other experience was with a Mini-14 I had bought in the 90s during the mag ban. Factory mags were stupid expensive and aftermarket mags were pretty hit or miss. |
| Agreed. The Promag mags are junk. They don't support the front of the round very well, and won't chamber the last round in the mag. |

I just found out Thermold makes a 26-round mag for the Mini-30. I had a handful of Thermold AR-15 mags in the ‘90s during the Clinton ban. While they were affectionately called “Thermelts”, they actually functioned well and were fairly robust. Nobody liked the idea of plastic mags at the time. They were the pre-Pmag of the day. I have a couple on order to try out, along with some additional Ruger 20s. I’ve heard the Ruger 10-round mags are iffy. |
