I just bought a Mini 14. This is my first one in about 15 years. My state is now a ban state, so we are stuck with 10 round mags. They kind of suck because they are so stubby they are a bit difficult for someone with big hands to get into the gun quickly, only hold 10 rounds of course, and don’t fit very many mag pouches. Enter the Caldwell 10 round AR-15 Magazine coupler. I saw one review that said this could be modified to work with Mini mags, so I ordered some to see what I could make work. The coupler has protrusions designed to sit in the grooves on metal AR mags and grab the base plate. 2 of the three dimples don’t line up with the factory Mini 10 rounders, but the largest one does. Out came the Multi tool and away went the offending grooves. The coupler locked up to the mag tight. Next problem the coupler was in the way for the magazine release locking the mag in. Out came the multi tool again. The mags now lock together tightly and the mag release works as designed. The only downside side is you have to use a finger to drop the mag, the coupler prevents you from being able to hit the release with another mag. The notch is still a bit rough, I’ll clean that up with the dremel latter. Unmodified: Attached File Modified dimples without the notches: Attached File Notches: Attached File In the rifle: Attached File In what CDNN advertises as a bushmaster 10 round AR mags shingle, but really fits nothing well, except this: Attached File These come with a rubber mag cover, that fits too loosely to stay on, something like a Pmag cover would be a great addition. Does anyone else have any 10 round coupler ideas? |

I’ve been doing mag changes for the last 30 years, swapping to stripper clips would be a completely different reload process than all my other rifles. For me, a 1-6x receiver mounted optic and detachable mags were driver for getting a Mini. Stripper clips would negate both of the advantages of that. |
