Put a Leupold 2-7 on my 45-70 trapper, took off the skinner rail and went with Talley medium rings. My skinner rail is out of spec, mounted the scope on it with rings and it points off center to the right, can look down and see the rail is machined wrong. Will contact Ruger next week about that. I loaded 10 new subsonic loads to try, went with the Hodgdon recommended load of 13 grns titegroup with the 410 grn sub X bullet. Manual says 1005 fps out of a 24” barrel, well mine went little over 1100. So far this has been the most accurate subsonic load I tried with a really good SD of 2.3 with 5 shots. I’ll have to cut it back a half grain to see if I can get it under 1100 and keep the accuracy. I also annealed the brass for the first time, may have contributed to the accuracy also. I zeroed at 50 yds, took me 6 shots to get into the dot, couple clicks up and right and put 4 together, pretty happy with this setup and load.

Too bad about that rail. Ruger does some good stuff, like that marlin. QC doesn’t seem great, my Ruger American is laser accurate, but before I mounted a scope I found the rail screws were finger tight, and one was missing and found in the box. IDK if it’s just the caliber, but my old school marlin GG tosses 45/70s into tiny groups too. 100 is a stretch for my 2x fixed, so paperwork is usually 50 yards. Cloverleaf’s every time. I’m not doing subs like you but yours are def dialed in. I swear if I had a decent optic I could dial it could be a 400 yard gun. I take some long pokes at the range, and by just seeing the impact I can estimate hold over and nail 12” plates at 300+, just takes a few shots. Mine is a fav elk gun. Attached File My rail is a chunk of low, blank rail from brownells. Drilled it myself with a cordless. Miracle it came out straight, I think I can call it the first cantilever rail ever on a GG. Maybe 2005? If I get a new optic I’ll do a proper extended rail. |

I’ve had to send back an 1895 SBL (firing pin assembly fell out of the bolt). And a Marlin Dark (hand guard mounted wrong magpul screws pressed the mag tube). Both were fixed without delay. You can ship from UPS primary HUB with Label from Ruger and it returns to your door (signature required) or from a gun store. Very accurate guns. |

It’s just the rail that’s messed up, gun itself has been flawless so far with over 200 rnds through it, very satisfied with the gun. |
