I have the GSG MP40 .22LR rifle with 16" barrel and "fake suppressor" shroud and am looking to convert it to a Short Barrel Rifle after ATF  approval.  However, I prefer to remove the barrel from the upper receiver prior to cutting it to 10".  I have searched online and even tried contacting ATI for disassembly instructions without luck.  Has anyone successfully removed their .22LR barrel?

My reference to the barrel was in reply to a question in the post above it, about the M1A1 SBR I had in the same photo with my MP40 SBR.

So I do have an MP40 SBR, but it's the 9mm version and it started out as a pistol - so I only had to add the stock.

MFIAP.com sells a historically accurate looking replacement bolt operating handle for the ATI GSG MP40 9mm.   It does not pop out like the stock handle does.

Okay... neither ATI nor GSG can or will offer advice on how to remove the barrel from the MP40 .22LR rifle.  I have tried to do so by removing the four magazine well screws, and the mag release button.



Removing all five of these screws allows movement of the receiver half cover in the chamber area like it wants to come off.   However, the cover is still held in place at the front of the chamber.  There is an allen head set screw under the barrel that does not unscrew.   It merely turns in either direction with a "ratchet-like" feel.  (There is a similar screw on my MP40P 9mm, but I'm not going to mess with it to see if it unscrews until I know what is wrong with the one on my .22LR.



I'm sure that the barrel shroud has to come off the end of the barrel before the receiver cover can come off and expose the barrel.  Surely someone at ATI (or GSG) can tell me how.  I own 6 ATI/GSG firearms.  They owe it to me!  Hopefully, someone can help me.
