I'm putting the final touches on an M53 but cannot get the top cover to latch. With the arm, channel, whatever it is called that is moved by the bolt installed that part crashes into the top of the receiver with about a receiver's thickness to go before the latch can hook the receiver. With that arm removed the top cover basically sits as it should. Any experiences with this issue? |

Without pics or knowing if the bolt carrier group is in the gun it is hard to tell what issue you are actually having. That being said, If the bolt carrier group is in the gun, the bolt needs to be back to allow the feedway cam to properly engage the stud on the top of the bolt. You can't slam the top cover closed on a forward bolt on the MG42 (even on semis the bolt has to be back IIRC) Sven Manticore Arms |

Ah, you are saying the back of the feedway campath (i.e. feed cam) is running into the to rear of the receiver when trying to close the top cover? Did you reweld this from receiver chunks, or did you use new shells from BRP, etc? How did you jig up/confirm the dimensions when you built it? Are the parts all from the M53, or is this a different top cover you are trying to install (i.e. original MG42, MG3, Italian MG42/59) If the rear of the feed cam is running into the receiver, that would suggest that if it is a weld up the distance between the trunnion and the rear chunk of receiver is a bit too short. Sven Manticore Arms BRP receiver. Likely a blem due to how many things I've had to fix. Calipers and constant fitting during assembly. Haven't even done rivets yet. All M53 parts. With the cam/arm/whatever it's called in the top cover that arm would hit the top of the receiver. This hits here:  Then I found this since the top cover will latch with the arm removed:  The pin the arm rotates on sits so low the carrier extension crashes into it. I ended up milling out some material and I welded a receiver thickness tab over the the milled out area to raise it by the thickness of the receiver. Per the BRP prints my recveiver is ~0.125" too short, receiver is 0.100" thick. Also confirmed by another MG42 that does run. Seems to clear great now. |
