Update 12/7/25 - website for the April 25th, 2026 event is live https://chevtecgroup.ticketspice.com/bigboreblast2026 Just gauging interest in a mortar and 40mm competition. A friend and I had this idea after our last meet up. And I have a range in northeast Ohio willing to host it. Would be a one day event, likely in June or July, targets out to 200-250yds. I'm thinking large painted circles with a 55gal drum in the middle for the mortars, and some 4x4 sheets of plywood for the 40mm targets at varying distances. Rules are still in my head, but you'd get a certain number of shots to walk your rounds into the target. Maybe 6 or 8. Then somehow score the hits or count your closest hit. And there'd be some sort of time limit on your shots. Maybe 12 minutes for 8 shots(just throwing numbers out there) 40mm would be a certain number of shots per target. Probably 3 targets at different ranges. Likely with another target for practice/zeroing before the competition. Chalk rounds only, with a minimum weight of around 3 ounces for the guys that want to print their own. No idea what an entry fee would consist of. Guess it would depend on any sponsors we could convince to support us and contribute to a prize table. I'd probably consider allowing people to do multiple entries if they own multiple mortars, as each setup would be different. Let me know if you'd be interested in competing or have any suggestions. If you are interested in competing or just attending, leave a comment and let me know what you'd compete with(mortar or grenade launcher), or just attending. If I can get this organized, and it's a success, I could very well see this becoming a regular event. The range that said they host also has a live mortar, so it should be cool. |

As of now, It would be in canton/canton south unless something changes. I would like to have it a little further south for logistics reasons, but I can make canton work since that's my hometown |

I really would like to have a full on destructive device shoot/competition, but I think starting with 40mm and mortars is good until I can secure something really good for a range. I am planning on talking to a couple more ranges from Zanesville to Marietta, OH. Marietta would probably allow AT guns as I've seen them there before. But I'd have to see what it'd take to rent the range for a day. |

I don't want to drive hours just to shoot 6 rounds and leave haha. |

I'm north of Cincinnati and would be interested in attending and possibly shooting. I've got a registered 60mm Yugo/M2 with a subcal kit that I've never fired. I've also got a few alum beer bottle to fin adaptors printed by a friend if anyone would like possibly to try. Russ |

Could make for a fun side activity while ppl are waiting their turn on the main range. |

My buddy has a 3" M5 AT gun he is almost ready to fire as well. |

Just a little update. I have 2 ranges that are willing and I'm waiting to hear back about some others. One of them cares a lot about their grass, so I'm thinking it may be a no-go, especially if people want to dig in their baseplates. One that I'm waiting to hear back from, would be good with almost anything, but it could also be the most expensive to host and is a 3hr drive for me. Which wouldn't be a huge issue as long as I can get a buddy or two to help haul stuff. Once I have a location and Date, I'm gonna reach out to some of the DD vendors and see if we can get some prizes donated or just general sponsorships to cut down on attendee costs. |

If its out ECNS way, Id definitely come out and participate. Depending on the location and date I could help you out if need be. Just an FYI, SGT-Fish is definitely a good dude and we had a TON of fun at East Coast Night Shoot last year. @bdover |

I’d prob be in, if you guys set it up do you can rest & pay entrance fee for a flat rate , say $200ish I think it’s be a decent amount. I know I’d be in for that price point. |

I know I’d be in for that price point. I'm shooting for sub $100 for a one day event. Hopefully a decent bit less for spectators, a price for shooters and maybe a small fee for each competition entry. Still something I'm thinking about. But I'm gonna try to keep the costs down as much as possible |

I was just thinking if you could keep it under $200 including rental of a blaster & ammo. For me that makes it worth it since I don’t have any of the DD stuff. And shirts please. |

No promises on that. |

Though some drums full of water would probably be fun targets. |

Southington is an option and may be necessary for the future if this event grows. But they cost more $$$ and take more planning to host an event there. I've known the owner of greenport since I was a kid and he has always been a great guy. He also owns a mortar and a couple grenade launchers, as well as quite a few other cool toys that he'll probably have on site to check out. Gotta talk him into competing. He was also a line safety at the knob creek shoots for years so he has an idea of what can be done. Still waiting for final confirmation on the date, and costs. Once I get that, I'll get some numbers crunched and make a "flyer" that we can start posting. I'll also need to figure out a registration list and all that. Fun 🙃 |

I saw a video today on the north-south skirmish association mortar competitions. They score the closest 5 shots out of 10 with their black powder mortars. Sound like a slow process. For mortars, I was thinking something like darts, where each ring is worth a certain number of points. Or team to hit the bullseye (plastic barrel) in the least number of shots, defaulting to the closest hit if no one gets a bullseye. I just want the scoring to be simple and fast, and generally fair, whether or not you are shooting a 50mm mortar or a 4.2in monster. For the 40mm, I kinda want to do multiple targets/distances. Maybe 5 rounds at a small 50-100m target and 5 at a larger 100-200m target. Scored by how many hits you get. I'm still open to ideas. And I appreciate the suggestion, it's a good one and would be a good test to how well you know your dope |

I'm still developing/printing ammo so the more lead time in how many rounds the better. It would be cool if the guys from Ordnance.com could come demo TRUMP rounds (and put some on the prize table |

I've done some buying and selling with them in the past. While blast radius points would be cool. If we get enough shooters for future events we could do different classes. But I'm only making one trophy for mortars this year haha |
| My .02 about time. I've considered having friendly competition at get togetherness and I'm ok with someone using my mortar to participate. But for the most part we aren't trained gun crews. I'm afraid of people rushing for a good time and doing something unsafe (not paying attention to hands over the muzzle, or misfire/hangfire issues). |

Very good point! I appreciate it. I was imagining a time limit to just keep people from taking too long, waiting on wind, etc. But I definitely see how it could cause an issue. Especially with the I weren't risk of the mortars. So we may just skip a shot timer for this and see how things play out. |

I won't be able to make it, but I would request that you post up info/results/videos (after the match) for those who can't make it. I want try to talk our local 2 gun match director into a side match and I'm curious to see stage/how the scoring works out for you. |

And you'll be welcome to recruit spotters on-site if you come alone. Or you can run it as a traditional mortar team with a guy aiming, a guy firing, and a guy spotting if you want. Dressing the part, whether modern tactical gear or vintage re-enactor getup is highly encouraged. And may be worth some bonus points and/or bonus prizes. I'd love to a team of ww2 reenactors and may reach out to a local organization that does that stuff. For ammo count. I'm leaning toward 6 rounds for mortar competition and 10 for 40mm. But if you only have 4 or 5 rounds to compete, then compete with what you have and maybe you'll get closest in fewer shots |

Quick update. The venue has changed to the southington hunt club range facility, in garrettsville, Ohio. The first range was very inviting but lacked a wide enough firing line. Southington is familiar to us, will have more room for shooters/big guns, offers camping for those that want to stay overnight, and is much more accessible to vehicles. I'll be posting a link to tickets in the near future. Along with more details. If you want to bring a big gun other than a mortar let me know so that I have an idea of what sort of footprint you'll need. I'm thinking that we'll have blocks of time set aside for big guns where we'll move the firing line back to around 300 yards. More to come later, -Jake |
