I'm sure it's been asked before, but has anyone successfully suppressed the m82a1?

Lots of vague info on the net about why not to do it, from over pressuring the rifle to damaging the Donut to voiding the warranty to whatever else.  I never see the results of doing it, and I never see more than one guy saying it works.

So if you have done this please let me know.

I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel but I just don't understand why this wouldn't work given a titanium suppressor, if it's only a weight issue.

A friend of mine has his 82A1 suppressed and I have fired it a few times.
It functioned just fine.   Sorry, that's all I got.

When I was the Firearms Coordinator/gun room manager for Federal Ammunition from 20-22', we had an old original m107 that I installed a Surefire Socom 50 SPS on and fired without issue. I can dig up some pictures in a bit.

cool, but the M107 is supposed to be suppressor ready - not the M82A1 according to Barrett, which is my question as to why not.

The rifle in the photo is an early original m107 which was almost identical to the 82a1, not the newer m107a1 that is advertised as suppressor ready. It was also sent back to Barrett and “refurbished”, so maybe they updated the springs.

Yes we thread it 7/8-14 for the Barrett. Everyone that used it says it would perfectly. We have also tested it with hundreds of rounds with no issues.

Thanks

And my copy paste summary from a different thread on the matter

So from fiddling with my newer (2021) model M82A1 the accelerator is still there as one expects and is still indicated on the official schematic (https://barrett.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Model-82A1-Exploded-View-for-barrett.net_.pdf) which is dated 2021.

Its my understanding of the m82a1 suppression "issue" involves the can adding too much backpressure causing increased recoil and stress on the weapons system. This wear of course culminating in system failures. The accelerator and accelerator rod assists the barrett in unlocking faster to deal with some weird loadings and generally improve reliability. The traditional advice of removing these will sacrifice reliability for reduced recoil with the thought process being that the backpressure of the can will do its job.

From comparing the above m82a1 to m107a1 schematic (https://barrett.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/M107A1-Exploded-View-for-barrett.net_.pdf) It looks like the accelerator rod has been redesigned to incorporate a "Bolt Extender" (Part 33) in the 107a1. Additionally we can see a hydraulic rotating buffer for the 107a1, a one piece firing pin and a slight change on the bolt itself. I have no input on the bolt or firing pin changes, but the hydraulic buffer of course is going to improve the recoil dampening which will help.

After trolling through the barrett parts store and trying to find m107a1 specific vs m82a1 specific parts I cant find anything other than the aforementioned;
1) Buffer changes
2) Bolt changes
3) Firing pin changes
4) Accelerator changes

With an m82a1
1) Buffer changes - Easy $475 https://barrett.net/shop/kit-hydraulic-buffer-assembly-and-sleeve/
2) Bolt changes - Impossible/Unknown
3) Firing pin changes - Likely little impact on suppressor performance
4) Accelerator changes - Delete rod entirely and sacrifice unsuppressed cycling(?)
I think most important would be trying to track down a low backpressure 50bmg suppressor.
KGM made a can called the R50 at one point that was optimized to run on an unmolested m82a1 but it is since discontinued. I am unsure of any further candidates in that class though.
It might also be possible to get a stronger recoil spring to increase dwell time, but that would likely cause cycling issues with subsonic ammunition and will be a headache of a project.

The real question is, Who is going to try this first for us?

Id also argue the shorter barrel guns will have more issue with suppressors since the barrel is lighter. That same lighter barrel also makes the removal of an accelerator rod probably less critical.

Great info. I want to belive that the AWC quote has all that I've been looking for.  I saw the turbodyne mentioned elsewhere as an option but no feedback.

I did find a gemtech can that is supposed to work with the m82. It's called the stormfront. According to the description they say it works with the 82 and 107.  When I asked specifically how does it work with the M82 the answer I got from the supplier was speculative at best...but offered no assurance.

Idk what to do really.  Those cans are super expensive.  Maybe getting a barret can is the best option for working right. Even if it's not suggested.

I recommend calling Barrett and asking them.  They will tell you that firing the 82A1 with a suppressor will cause damage to the rifle.  They will know what happened and void the warranty.  Here is their phone number, 615-896-2938.

Original 82A1's will beat themselves to death with a can installed. The accelerator and accelerator rod need to be removed from the bolt carrier. Very easily done.

The accelerator parts need to be removed because the accelerator rod pushes off of the barrel extension when the barrel starts to recoil, thus accerating the opening and rear ward travel of the carrier.
The accelerator arm will beat the shit out of the corresponding area in the trigger housing if the accelerator parts are not removed.

Keep a very close eye on the barrel bumper and impact bumper installed on the barrel on either side of the hex shaped barrel stop that is welded into the upper reciever. Once those get battered bad enough that cuts start to be seen, they need replacing.  The battery bumper, the pice closest to the barrel extension has a flat on one side that the new bumper must be installed in the same orientation.  Also, it has a radius on one side. That is relief for the welds of the barrel stop.

The first can we built up at Barrett was about 3 or 3.250" in diameter. It was very quiet. But a heavy fucker. The later version which is the one seen now has the brake on the end and is a bit smaller in diameter. It is not meant for the older 82A1 rifles. It's for the 107 and 107A1 rifles.  It could probably work on the  older rifles, but a lot of money and parts change out would be required. It would be easier to buy a new 107 style rifle. And Barrett probably wouldn't do the work as they have so much other stuff going on now.

They have concentrated so much on military contracts, it seems they have lost touch with the civilian shooters. It was always a priority with Ronnie to take care of the civilian side as they kept the business open during the lean times  between  contracts. Ronnie always stressed that about taking good care of the civilian shooters.
When we started getting a lot of military contracts, I went above and Beyond to help civilian shooters with problems. Even taking calls at home when off of work to help. 2 guys were hired in the front office that resented me doing that. I was constantly getting chewed out for it by those 2. 1 of them finally convinced Ronnie that I needed to go. Oh well, shit happens.

If you need any other questions answered. Ask here or via IM here. I will get back as soon as I can. I check here often.

How old is your rifle? Approximate serial range and can used if you want to include that. Or IM me here and I will try to help.

Thanks for the great information.  So with the accelerator removed does it only cycle suppressed, or not at all?

And from what I gather out of this, the  battery bumper will wear out and need replaced.  Is that a big job? Just unhook the recoil springs take off the brake if any remove the barrel and slide if off?  What is the most catastrophic thing that you have seen happen to these things suppressed? We talking like broken revievers?  Sad about Barrett selling, your description of their state of customer service is what I feared from happening. :(

The rifle will function without the accelerator and rod. It may short stroke on occasion.

Changing out the bumpers is really easy. Remove the brake, slide barrel out of the upper and replace bumpers. Reinstall iis a cake walk.

Never saw a reciever destroyed from suppressor use.  Dominican Republic yellow tip will fuck one up in a hurry. Avoid like the plague.

Yep, they'll also tell you that you are in man's land for installing any other suppressor on an M107A1 other than their QDL :D

Yes. When installing them, make sure the radius3d sides face in to each other. Or facing the barrel stop. Make sure the flat of the battery bumper in located onto the flat of the barrel just in front of the barrel extension.
