Anyone here have any direct knowledge on an M1A standard and the Ultimak Scout mount? Looking to retain the clip guide and top load feature. Plan on using a red dot, potentially a scout scope. Thanks for those who may have helpful input. https://ultimak.com/product/m8/ |

I used an Ultimak rail on an M1A Scout with a 2X7 Burris pistol scope on the rail no complaints, still have an Ultimak rail on a mini14. they are completely forward of the action, no interference with clip guides or ejection I've seen them on Garands too |

The M1 Garand I shoot the most (had 7 at one time before handing them out to the next generation in the family) has an Amega Ranges scout scope mount on it. On that mount is a 2X7 LER scope. Felt funny at first (muzzle heavy) but after using it for awhile it felt normal. Funny thing was, when I grabbed one of the standard M1 Garands it didn't feel funny/unbalanced. The Amega Ranges (don't know about the Ultimak) has a thin steel section that runs under the barrel and is attached to the aluminum rail section (on top of the barrel) with several screws. That should make the barrel do a little less "whipping" when fired. The instructions say to set it up, shoot it and then retighten the screws after about 50 rounds or so as the screws can work loose. After that second tightening they should stay tight. That is exactly what happened with mine (again, no idea about the ultimak or how it is set up or reacts to shooting). My M1 is definitely accurate. Several times I've had people ask me it it is a match rifle when they see the groups it shoots. I've never shot anything through it other than HXP or my 150 grain FMJ/IMR4895 reloads (pretty much GI ammo velocity) It's a sweet shooting rifle. Makes my M1A look bad. If I was to buy a second M1A and scope it I'd try a scout scope on it, too. |

| Had one on mine with 2-7 Burris in Leupold QD rings. Handled great. Only shot ZXP(?) ball through it, and it was horrendously inaccurate. Almost certainly the ammo but never tested it with anything else. Just removed it to put on a "normal" scope mount for CMP Vintage Sniper competitions. |

Mark, I don't have any numbers, I sold the rifle a long time ago, but the rail attached to the barrel at 3 points so its got to add some stiffness. certainly it was more accurate than I was. I don't recall ever seeing a used Ultimak for sale. I had almost forgotten, but I used info from a libertarian guy in Wyoming who called himself the Frugal Squirrel, I had to mail him a $20 bill so he would send me the dope he had worked out his take was that the combo was a good cross of hunting/survival/combat weapon keep the scope on 2X for quick shots, dial it to 7X for longer shots kinda the scout rifle idea but heavier maybe he's still out there. |

As someone with two rifles that have ultimaks already—unless you’re intending to put an actual scout scope on it, going with the scout squad is the route I would take. Then you have all of the benefit, and it’s just “done”. Plus easier to offload later if you decide you don’t like it. That being said, still glad the Ultimak exists:
