| What is the "go to" scout scope set up? The most obvious needs for me would be to maintain zero while not affecting reliability or accuracy. Please share your set ups,and pics are always nice. TIA |

Pretty controversial topic and you will find a ton of polarized info on optics for the M1A. I've been down that road. The action on the M1A is regarded as pretty violent in both directions and it creates durability issues. I have a Loaded and have looked at finding glass for it a couple times. Every time, I decide I can't afford the glass that will survive on it and it goes back in the safe for a while. Please report back with what you find/decide? I've had a Leupold Gold 2x scout scope on my SOCOM. Since this pic, I've upgraded the stock, but the scope has held zero for well over 1000 rounds. I've taken it as far as 500 yards with good results. Generally shooting M80 ball. Attached File |

I was actually talking more about the mounting system than the actual optics. I've never tried a scout set up and may hate it.... But I want to try the best so I know it's the system I hate and not the equipment. Thanks for the well wishes! Freedom sure is nice..

Those scout mounts transfer a ton of heat into the optic. I had both a Basset low mount and an ARMS 18. ARMS all day, every day. The Basset will return to zero with proper torque, but it's a chunky affair. ARMS is barely there. Very low profile. I never removed the mounts, so return-to-zero wasn't a big selling point. An M14 with an Aimpoint on top was a seriously handy rifle. |

I have a Sadlak receiver mount I was fortunate enough to grab off the EE a while back. I'll want big glass when I jump on something. A 22", wood stocked M1A is a pig I hope I never have to carry around, so Scout duties aren't a consideration for me on that. I have a Romy G with a dot mounted out on the rear sight mount, that's the only long gun I own with the optic pushed away from my face. It took a while to get accustomed to it, but once I did I really liked it. I really appreciate having an aiming point way out that doesn't occlude my peripheral. I find my brain can transition from the dot to full field and back without breaking concentration or losing awareness on either. I've never shot a pistol with a dot, but I imagine it's similar. |

| I just go with Irons on my scout. I have tried tons of options. Always finding myself returning to irons on this rifle. I have tried Sadlak mounts, Vltor handguards, Springfield Gen 4 steel mounts, ARMS mounts, probably more. Red Dots, 1-4X, LR scopes, never got satisfied, my 22" is a different animal. |
