The M1 Ball round was adopted in 1926 as an improvement over the Cartridge, Caliber .30, Model of 1906 (a 150 grain loading, which was in turn an improvement over the Model of 1903, which had a 220gr round nosed bullet and was originally fielded with the then-new Springfield 1903 rifle). With that said, 150gr bullets over IMR 4895 do very nicely. As to 168gr bullets over IMR 4895 and other powders. The important point is to NOT overload the Garand's gas system with too much gas or gas at too high a pressure. This is why several loading manuals have separate sections on loading for the Garand - to protect the gas system. |

I just chronographed some loads using IMR-4064, Sierra 150 grain Match Kings seated @ 3.250", Lake City NM brass and Winchester standard large rifle primers.
45.5 grains of IMR-4064 netted 2500 fps. 47.0 grains of IMR-4064 netted 2600 fps. Based on these results I can probably go up to 48.5 grains of IMR-4064 in my rifle using these components. Estimated velocity at 48.5 grains would be around 2700 fps. Varget, RE-15, IMR-4064, IMR-4895 and H4895 run neck and neck for powder charge weights and velocity achieved when loaded in .30-06. |
