My only experience owning a carbine is a Universal I had as a kid years back. It was "cool", fun little plinker, but from what I know now, probably not the best.  I honestly can't justify the cost of a Winchester, Inland, IBM or other legit, USGI surplus, and probably wouldn't shoot it enough TO justify it, so, of the commercially available ones out there, (not counting Universal), what are decent ones? I've seen Plainfield, IAI, the new Auto Ordnance, I'm pretty sure Iver Johnson is basically an upscaled Unisversal. Any info appreciated. Thanks. |

| I don't know about you, OP, but I'm seriously thinking of getting a Fulton Armory service grade Carbine. Yeah, they're expensive. But they have a great reputation for running flawlessly and that's something that I want. I don't want to fiddle with surplus guns or lower-tier builds. |

I would look for an early Plainfield or generation 1 Universal with USGI parts if possible. I have the former and it's a decent shooter, bit ammo picky but I tended to feed it junk ammo when I was shooting it. I've actually toyed with selling mine but don't feel like messing with FFL's (sorry for you on that). I personally ain't a fan of the A/O or "New" Inland carbines. I had the former and it was a POS. |

OP< I'm not saying that there aren;t any good surplus guns out there, it's just that I don;t want to take my chances on one. There's another thread on here with surplus 30 carbine ammo on sale at the CMP. I tried to order 2 ammo cans but didn;t have my info in their system. |

And that. I would really like a real one, but then again, it's an 80 year old, used and abused, tool, who knows what it's been through, how hung over the last armorer was when he replaced the barrel, swapped the bolt, or the last Bubba that "upgraded" it....... I've bought surplus before, rifles, handguns, seems like you always run into the "deal" it is, because along the way, someone else found the issue with it, concealed it, and "let it go" for a great price. |
