I ordered a .54 cal in fancy maple with a patch box. I plan to finish it with iron nitrate, honey amber dye, Kiblers gunstock finish and Jax Black for the metal going fairly dark. Here is my Colonail. Attached File Attached File Attached File |

I just picked my kit up at the PO- I haven’t even opened it yet. I got a very plain rifle, .54 cal, and the plainest grade of maple- I felt this would be most representative of how an original would have been. I’m not sure if I will blacke the metal, or actually brown it. I’ll have to study it a bit. |
| I have Bob Woodfill's book about the Hawken, and one thing I noticed, is that some of the originals, like the Kit Carson rifle, had lots of color casehardening on the steel parts other than the barrel. Since I want to make mine look like Jake or Sam were handing me a just-finished rifle, I want to duplicate that finish. I found a kit online with seven different gels that apparently does a good job of duplicating that finish, so I just ordered it. Not cheap, but I want this rifle to be just right. |
