I've owned both; a 2018 production M1A Standard and a Bula with their 19.25" medium weight barrel from back when they were selling barreled "kits" that basically just needed a stock and a flash hider. Sold the M1A, still have the Bula. The M1A was a good rifle. It was reasonably accurate. It did need a trip back to SAI for a new trigger housing as the one it shipped with was out of spec and seating mags was difficult. The main issue this rifle had was the receiver was not quite in spec, so mounting an optic required some fitting on the scope mount. The Bula is very nice. Even in a USGI fiberglass stock, it out shot the Springfield. Receiver fits any scope mount I've tried. I kept this one as I just liked it a little more than the SAI. The 19.25" barrel is pretty cool as it allows you to run a bayonet lug and still pull the gas piston for maintenance. I don't think you could go wrong with either. |
| I got a new in the box Springfield Armory M1A in the fall of 2011 and all I added was a 'NM' rear aperture as it came with a NM front sight from the factory. I use it frequently to shoot at a 2' steel plate at 400 yds with. All I've done to it is the rear sight, shimming the gas system and dressing the trigger group. With my 165 grn handloads, it's decently accurate at 400 yds so hitting the plate is relatively easy as long as it's not gusting. |
| The '21 Springfield Standard I just sold was excellent. MOA with Prvi 155 HPBT after I shimmed the gas system. No malfunctions of any sort and the trigger was phenomenal. |

I can't confirm, but I recall that Bula's CS was not very helpful, even from those who bought directly from them or through James River. I will say that Springfield warrantied two- yes two- M1A Loaded rifles that an idiot former coworker blew up because he thought he knew a lot more about reloading than he actually did. They really should not have.

I can’t add anything on the JRA side, but I’ve had four Springfields. I still have three. One early 90’s standard and two early 2000’s loadeds. Mine have all been solid and I wish I had back the one I let go. Since it’s now kinda a pic thread…..
