Can you expand on the useless part?

Not the same thermal optic, but this illustrates the concept.

My RH25 on MQD mount is 1.615”
On a 5/8” riser it’s 2.24 (-.02” from 2.26)
On a Fast riser it’s 2.28 (+.02” from 2.26)

You flat out won’t notice a +/-.020” deviation from center through the optic or magnifier.  That’s nothing.  So any 5/8” riser or even Fast riser is fine under the MQD to line up the RH25 with a 2.26” FTC magnifier.  As mentioned… you WILL want a magnifier to look into the RH25 eyepiece and give you proper field of view.

I’m running both an EXPS (1.69” with giant window) and RH25 (1.615”) on a 5/8” Bobro riser in front of a 2.26” FTC magnifier and it’s actually very usable with the thermal.  Of course, I can just pop off the thermal and magnifier for passive NV or put just the magnifier back on for normal daytime setup.  A Unity Fast Micro/Magnifier setup behind an RH25 on any 625”-.665” riser would be basically the same (perhaps even more compact).

THIS is exactly what I tried to accomplish several times - I think it's the Bobro I need to accomplish it. Even that far away from the Eotech you still get that full view huh? Sweet!!

All that and not even a honorable mention of the new fancy Phantom Hill setup brother?  I'll go back to that Thread to read your hands on review and pics! Do I want one?

Well not full view of the thermal… I’m saying the image completely fills up the magnifier view so I’m getting that full FOV (7deg).  Which is unsurprisingly what you’d get through most LPVO dialed to 3x.  In fact it feels exactly like sticking the RH25 in front of a TA44/TA11/TA31 except the reticle is EOtech.

The CTF-2 is really nice and customizable to different price points or light preferences.  I set mine up with Vulcan+Vampire heads and it’s kind of like the “MAWL-at-home” for 1/2 the price.  About the same weight and I have 3 tactile buttons that allow immediate access to laser only (0.7mW), short range wide-divergence (100mW LED illuminator), or long range narrow-divergence (135mW 5-degree laser illuminator)… an I can also twist a bezel to go from IR to visible.

Of course you do lose the visible laser - but you gain white light instead without the weight & switchology of having to add a white light to the rifle. If having visible laser is more important; then go spend the extra +$2300 on a MAWL+Scout setup vs the CTF2 Vulcan/Vampire.

That's good gouge on the Eotech. When I tried it I was trying to get the RH as close as possible to the EXPS and it was not very visible. I'll get a BoBro mount and try it your way.

Regarding the CTS2. I was subscribed to that thread for awhile and the responses came in 200 times a day. I spoke with Mike (the owner) who is extremely customer service oriented and cool. Those suckers sold out faster than Black Friday! I'm chock full of Lasers after trying out just about every brand out there. Narrowed my choices down to a MAWL (Using Modbutton for White Light) and FP DBAL A3 like Frenchie just posted somewhere here. I really like using the TNVC/Unity Switch for that. I do prefer having a Vis laser but definitely see the advantage of the Phantom Hill. Maybe I'll ask Mike if I can T&E a CTF3 when they come out.

A YHM or LaRue 5/8” Riser (slightly shorter but cheaper) would work if you hang the EXPS and/or RH25 a slot or two off the riser. In the interest of vanity, I just opted for the longer Bobro.

A Wilcox OASYS mount will let you flip the thermal to the side. I can’t even imagine how tall your mounts would have to be to flip a thermal monocular to the center.

Speaking of OASYS mounts, I carved one up to liberate the female dovetail adapter and acquired a spare male dovetail shoe.  I’m going to make a c-shaped bracket that fits around the RH25 so the male dovetail is positioned the correct height over top the thermal when the pictail is clipped into the OASYS adapter underneath. BAM!!… pictail-obverse-dovetail adapter.

I just need a strip of 5052-H32 aluminum.  I have CRS (steel) stock but that would be heavy and I think 6061-T6 plate might crack while bending/hammering.

Awesome stuff @Millennial

I was and still am tempted to go with a flip to side mount. Not 100% sure yet, as I need to get out with mine over the holidays a bit more to see if it will be of benefit.

I wanted to update you on the cable I had made by Cory @ Gunsite Academy.

In requested a 30in cable. The 90 degree connector was going to be a 60-90 day wait and I didn’t feel like waiting that long. Went with a straight connector instead as that is what he had on hand.

Photos are just a quick mock up with a spare helmet. The cable could have been about 4in shorter but I wanted to have plenty of slack for routing and mount movement and articulation.

It will. You'll want 3003 or 5052 for forming. How thick do you want? I might have some 1/8" Laying around, but probably nothing much thicker than that.

It may require the primary sight to be mounted higher, but if someone could make a flip to center mount for one of these, oh man, that would be nice.

I'm not a huge fan of flip to side mounts anymore after being spoiled by the Unity Mount FTC mount.

Yeah it is slightly excessive. 20-25in would have been doable I think, but I wanted extra length for routing through my helmet scrim on my main helmet.

Fortunately you can get it made to whatever length works for you.

Lol… I’m an idiot.

I barely used my RH25 at the night shoot (because I forgot my EXPS 3X magnifier and LPVO at home) so it just sat in my pouch most of the night… and then reading your post just now I realize/remember I could have at least mounted it up and done a bunch of night recording.

I did take it over to the 700 yard range and tried to shoot … but the steel target contrast didn’t show up that well and a 1x25mm thermal was a bit anemic for those ranges anyways.

Oddly enough, I thought the stand-alone view mode was WAY more clear than clip on. I could see detail on the truck at 600+ yards and plainly see the 200 & 300 yard steel. Especially usin 2X/4X zoom mode… the image processing is really clean.  In clip on mode in front of a Razor HD GenII 3-18x (set around 3-6x) the truck was very tough to make out and I couldn’t really see the steel hardly at even at 200yd.

Maybe it was the razor, I’m not sure what the focus/parallax on that scope is because I don’t ever use the thermal on it much.

Finally put some actual time in with the battery pack and cable. Went with a MyCharge H20 (water resistant) 6700mah battery pack. Everything works great.

Almost seems like taking the battery out made a small but noticeable difference in weight out front.

Not sure if this has been discussed in this thread but I figured it was relevant. I was adjusting the parallax on my rh25 and used a z-bolt 18650 battery, which lacks a micro usb plug, and the optic was shutting off anytime it experienced a slightly sharp jolt. I’ve got mine mounted as a clip on in front of an lpvo with a modified pictail mount in a Wilcox flip mount and every time I flipped the optic back down it would shut off. When I changed the battery to a surefire 18650 it worked fine for the rest of the night. I suspect it has to do with the different lengths of the batteries but I haven’t actually compared them to say with any certainty. YMMV

There are two different battery caps that ship with the unit when new, based on different 18650 battery lengths. Since you aren’t using the provided batteries, you will likely need to switch to the other cap.

The Nitecore USB 18650s that come quite the RH25 have saved my bacon once or twice.  And they’re not crappy cells either like some UltraChynaFire or something.

You can charge them real quick with just a micro USB cable and a car charger or power bank and not a whole wall charger thing.

If I were going to switch to something else, it’d probably be a Panasonic or Samsung or Sanyo.

Used one in the EE for a decent price. Comes with the QD mounts.

I picked up an RH25. I wish the FOV was larger but thats my only real complaint about device funstion right now. Otherwise, I was able to use a modarmory bridge to get a PVS14 and the RH25 to line up with my eyes at the same time, but just barely, and I suspect that wouldn't be the case for everyone. The image through the thermal isn't perfectly upright, but enough to stay in helmet mode without an issue. The complaint there is a hardware issue, the RH25 still sits further away from my face than the PVS14. If the dovetail was positioned a little further forward to bring the RH25 closer to my eye, it'd be pretty good. And again, the FOV being larger would make it better for helmet mount.

In front of the elcan I can run 1x or 4x decently. Pictures don't really say much here, taken inside, through an ioptic, at a range of about 6 feet. lol. The rubber eye shield also isn't doing anything so I wouldn't run it that way.

It does seem to be a pretty versatile little unit that I need to play with a lot more.

Videos taken via app to phone connection, in monocular mode (I.E. obviously NOT pointing firearms at anyone).

Edit: Standy, maybe get videos to work...

Thats hardcore buddy! I know what you mean about them lining up to each eye. Having it remain in Helmet Mode provides me best FOV.
Until such time a different mount is launched (maybe Neal @ Noisefighters) it's basically one or the other. Nice setups though!

I'm not familar with the Elcan SpecterDR. Is the first pic of it (6th pic in post) the optic in 1x or 4x?

Kind of on the same topic, will the RH25 placed in front of optic only work best with magnified optics? I figured because of eye relief, it wouldn't be ideal for use with normal 1x optics like Aimpoints and EOTechs.

Yes.

It works with unmagnified optics, but not any better than holding it ~10” in front of your eye. Go get a camcorder and hold it 10” in front on your eye looking through the viewfinder… it works, but not well at all.

Something to remember is that even 1X prisms and LPVOs are still magnified optics (they just happen to have a magnification power of 1X) whereas Aimpoints and EOTechs are unmagnified optics (light passes more or less straight through).

Were you issued an ACOG? Never liked it, which is why I ditched it and used an old Eotech in Iraq. It would be great if it was able to mate up to an EXPS but we cant have it all I guess.

Yes i'm hoping there will be a commercially produced option. The Noisefighters Jarm for the PVS14 was my jam so I'd love to see him do something with it. I also need and HTC to Fischer cable for external battery pack like I saw above in this thread... Thanks!

The 6th picture is 1x. I'd say 1x works a little better on the Elcan than red dots becasue the prism optic feels like it brings the whole image back through the tube, closer to your eye. It's still not great but its better. I found the best sight picture with the RH25 to be in standalone mode. That said, totally useable as a clip on when you're running nods or another themral for primary surveillance and the thermal clip on just for shooting.

They didn’t issue us DOD techie fobbits weapons.  We qual’d for weapons (and I couldn’t believe how mediocre most “professionals” were at shooting) but it wasn’t authorized on our contractor LOA so we weren’t issued them. Which in hindsight saved us a ton of hassle.

I mean, we weren’t issued but we kept a couple around

The RH25 works with an EOtech if you put a magnifier behind it.  Then you’re at 3X though; OK for shooting, not great for scanning.  EXPS are all QD anyways and so is the RH25 and it saves zero profiles for up to 9 guns.  So if you just swap optics, you get 1x/2x/4x without extra bulk and a selectable reticle.

IMO, the image processing in stand-alone and handheld mode is a lot nicer and smoother than through the LPVO anyways.  I could barely see the 200yd steel at The Night Shoot and the truck was not recognizable as a pickup truck with it clipped in front of my scope.  In stand alone mode, I could easily pick out the 300yd steel and even recognize features on the truck. I can’t explain this disparity, but it was stark.  The scope was a razor, so it wasn’t shit optics either.

I just got done larping out back some…
EXPS+3X+RH25  vs  RH25 standalone

The RH25 is WAY cleaner to look through alone.  And its a lot less crap on the gun.  Biggest bonus is instead of just 3X you get that wide 1X and then 2X/4X too.  At this point, since the EXPS and Unity magnifier both have QDs, I’m considering taking my own advice for that gun… just running Unity height EXPS+magnifier in the day and RH25 stand-alone at night (instead of clipping on).

I’ll probably keep using as a clip-on with my other LPVO guns (regardless of QD mounts) as clip-ons.  Swapping an EXPS for an RH25 in a gear pouch is one thing… where the hell you going to put an LPVO?  Plus, at least  LPVO still gives you that 1X.

Stumbled onto this article during insomnia and thought I'd drop it here since most enjoy Friday Night Lights. I know many of you attended this event and I sure the hell wish I had - looked like a blast (pun). Though its only a photo I was able to put a face to Neal Brace, who looks alot younger than I envisioned. Who here went and can share some of your own pics and stories?

For the life of me I still don't understand why the hell these guys named it "East Coast Night Shoot" and not something more catchy. Maybe just to attract assholes like me who affirm its NOT really "East Coast" enough - since I hail from New England.

"East Coast" Night Shoot

I don't think Nick (Chen) is on this forum, you can find him on the facebook groups (night vision 101 and Night Vision Users Group 2.0)

Yeah that’s Nic Chen. Awesome guy. He brought a lot of fun goods out to play with.

I also attended and shot some but mostly took video through the RH25. Videos looks so much better. The image stills from the video aren’t as impressive. Was a lot of fun.

Yup. I know exactly who you mean. He has a huge presence on those Facebook Groups. I sent him a PM saying how great the article was.
He sure sells alot of FP units there. There's no way I'd buy a used FP PEQ off an individual on FB.

I’ve seen the objective focus ring accessory on Instagram, anyone have a link of one to pickup? I tried searching but think I’m not calling it the right thing or something. Thanks
