Was at FFL to do a transfer on a shotgun and there was a short barreled Marlin 45-70 on the rack. Said it was a guide gun. Blued finish, exterior looked great. Ported barrel looked factory done but barrel looked pretty leaded at the muzzle. Quick google says these were made 1998-2002 Price seemed great so I added it to my transfer (RI 7 day wait and need to list each firearm on the transfer). Haven't shot a lever gun since a kid and didn't even have an itch for one, especially a 45-70. Going to have to get me some new bullet molds. What'd I get myself into. |
| They're fun rifles, expect a louder report w/ the ported barrel. If you're not already into reloading the 45-70 will get you there. |

Lots of guys like Ashley Performance, link here I'm partial to the scout mount setup. XS rail, Burris 2.75x fixed scout scope, low scope mounts. Three of my rifles are setup like this. |

I will be the first to ask... does it have the "JM" mark. The early ones came with ported barrels. It was a series of small posts. This one is in .450 Marlin caliber. The scope is no longer available from Leupold. XS rail and fixed sights. Yep JM marked on barrel near receiver. Serial number 01066xxxx. Google says 1999 manuf. Pics of ports, 4 each side at about 11 and 1 o'clock. 2 more at 3 and 9 oclock degress, shadow makes those ports difficult to see Attached File Attached File Attached File |

I actually chased a guy out a few benches down from me years ago when I was loading max 300gr loads. I bought a lead sled just so I could do load development without breaking my shoulder. I've tamed everything down pretty much now. Bought my GG when they first came out. XS scout rail, Leupold 2x Scout scope, and old Ashley peeps. Really nice, but the scope adds weight and cuts down on the handiness of the rifle I think. Attached File |

Want to keep the scope as low as possible and the rifle as light and don't want to remove the rear sights. So I'll reach out to Ashley to see when they get back in stock, will probably go that route. |
