If someone were to get one of those old aluminum Chinese solvent traps would ATF allow that as the basis for a form 1? I seem to remember some controversy about them. Or will it allow you to just give dimensions and not much other details? |

ATF asks for photos of the equipment and materials you intend to make the silencer from along with a description. If you give them a pic of a solvent trap kit they consider(ed) to be silencer parts, you’ll probably get denied. Might even get a knock on the door asking you to relinquish any unregistered silencer parts in your possession. Personally, on my form 1, I just uploaded a pic of my lathe, a pic of my mill, and a dimensional drawing. I basically said, “I don’t have any raw materials yet - I’ll get them from McMaster or Alro once I have an approved form.” |

I used the below documents (and variants of them) for my suppressor Form 1's and had about a dozen approved (different calibers/ lengths) in February 2026. No pictures of tools, only materials and concept drawing (made in PowerPoint and printed to PDF for upload). OEM: Form 1 Registration, United States Model: .22LR Silencer (it was in the list) Serial: my initials, followed by first digit of caliber, then three numbers. E.g., for 22: ABC2001, ABC2002, ABC2003 Additional Description: Will use lathe and drill press with materials purchased after Form 1 approved. I submit pics of my lathe and mill as well various pieces of bar stock, tube etc. I state I may be using the material I have on hand or may purchase more once I finalize the design. I do not show or state I would or will buy anything that is premade, but I also don't say I wont. The argument of if you buy it to be used for suppressor it is a suppressor or suppressor part really does apply to any material you buy. Be it just a dom tube or one that has threads already it is the same its a tube that could be made in to a suppressor. |

@ponykilr Did you require any further guidance on this? I've been using what's akin to: "All actions will be conducted in full compliance with NFA and GCA requirements for a non-licensed maker. At present, no materials or specialized parts are possessed. Procurement and the making of the device will only initiate post-approval of this application." |

I got my first Form 1 suppressor approved with basically, I intend to use hand tools if its approved, a picture of a pipe. I honestly don't have much of a plan yet. I did fill out another today to make a 9mm suppressor. |
I've met cats and dogs smarter than Cory and Trevor.
I used StaccatoC2 's approach and got one approved not long ago. Mine is stooopid simple. I know not ideal, but all steel (freeze plug baffles and pipe blast chamber) welded for .22lr. Pretty damn quiet, I wasn't expecting the results I got. Going to put in a couple more now that I have one out of the way. Spent about $24

Just adding my F1 results. Old, undrilled jk armament kit - Approved in June. And Amazon kit builds - Approved in July. I was less cautious in my Forms. I sent pictures of all the parts I had. But nothing was drilled; I made certain that could be verified from the photos. I also sent links to the Amazon listings. --- The j/k was approved well before my TSRA and GOA memberships meant anything, so that'n and the hush part of a 2 stamp papoose have been engraved. I have more lined up, but not drilled. I'm presently weighing my risk profile to decide how I feel about leveraging the Jennings/TSRA hall pass against engraving. Already skipped engraving an approved SBR 'cause it carries manufacturer engraving; I am deciding how I feel about running an entirely unmarked supressor on a TSRA life membership. |
