| I've never heard of an expert grade 1911 from CMP. Am I missing out on something? As far as asking for a dated firearm, yes, you can ask. They might not have one at the time you purchase, however. The only time I asked was because I wanted one from 1943, for my dad's birth year (as a gift). They didn't have any so I just asked for a 1940's serial. |

I don’t think that is an unreasonable request but nothing is promised. If I were that close, I’d make the trip and pick out what you want. I would tend to think the Talladega store would be stocked better but I’ve never been to either one so I might be talking out of my lower colon. Make sure and bring enough money to buy a couple rifles. You may find a nice Navy rifle too. |
| I haven't seen how the new online ordering goes, but when you could mail the packets in, I would always put a short handwritten note in the packet requesting XYZ. They always tried to honor it. |

So, you can order a Garand online now by submitting the same information we used to have to collect and mail in? Do I have that right? And did they eliminate mail order altogether? When I mail ordered a Garand 8-10 years ago I'd sometimes include a sticky note with some basic requests if I wanted something semi-specific. For instance, if I ordered a luck of the draw SG HRA or SA, and I wanted an SA, I'd ask for it. I was told/read that if the person pulling your rifle saw the note they'd look through the next 3-4 rifles to try to honor the request, but that was about it. |

Well, they’re down to building rifles now using reclaimed receivers off drill rifles, so your “Expert Grade” will be luck of the draw as to whether it comes with a WW2 SA number. |

An oddly large number of the reclaim rifles, receivers, and barreled receivers that have been seen have been six-digit serials or otherwise wartime serials, or at least the ones that have come out so far. It's possible that older rifles were made into drill rifles at higher rates although there's no way to know for sure. |

I know every one has own set priority. For me, 5-6 hours will be a perfect weekend road trip. Pack your gear and be more adventurous. When I was young and somewhat cash poor, I took bus across two States to try get my dream car at the time (not even an exotic). I ended didn't get it, but the trip was memorable. |
I'm about three hours away from the North Store. Visit the store every July during the National Matches. They take lots of my money !  Very helpful staff - will answer all of your questions. I picked up an Expert Grade IHC in July and could not be happier. Now looking at a Custom Shop Rifle. I will call the North Store before I head up that way. If I'm gonna spend $1600 I want to see the rifle first. Will go with a couple of friends and make it a weekend trip. But - call first ! Limited hours after the National Matches. And they are closed until Sept 11. And make sure all of your paperwork is in order ! ! There is only one problem visiting the North Store - trying to decide which M-1 to bring home with you ! |
