I got this back when the CMP was selling the Mossberg M44 training rifles for like $75. I've probably put less than 50 rounds through it, but it's the only .22 bolt gun I've got and it's very accurate with the stock sights (my other .22's are a 10/22 and a Marlin Model 60). I know there are scope mounts available for it that don't require permanent mods to the rifle, but it's got like a 26" barrel and a very thick, heavy target stock. I'm playing with the idea of sporterizing it by cutting down and threading the barrel and reprofiling the stock to something a bit lighter. I think it'd be an absolute tack driver (assuming I don't mess up the crown) and with a cheap NV scope and a suppressor it'd be hell on critters. I know it's not like messing with a Garand or an M1 Carbine; I don't get the feeling that these are super desirable or rare. And at the end of the day it's mine and I can do what I want with it. I just don't want to be "that guy" who jacks up a piece of history or something. |

Here's mine, a commercial model. The scope mount came from Havlin (?) sales and attaches to the rear sight screws. It's very accurate. |

What are they worth nowadays? You have mags and are more available? Lots of times it really is better to just sell what you have and buy something else. When you can buy a CZ 457 Scout for $500 or something similar that's a good option. Someone might really appreciate it. I always thought those old target guns were cool and regret not buying them cheap. That being said if you like it and don't mind spending the dough to get it where you want go for it. Chopping to 16" and threading is pretty handy. |

| Yeah, I checked Gunbroker after I posted this and saw that they've appreciated pretty well. And I could probably get a Savage .22 that would serve my needs just fine, so it wouldn't be cool to butcher the M44. |

The Savage MKII FVSR is an accurate little .22 that comes with a 16" threaded barrel. Run about $300 but can sometimes find on sale for $259. Their magazines are not the greatest, but the CSSpec mags fix the problem. |

I have the savage and it punches well above its weight class in regards to accuracy. Better than other lower end domestic rifles like ruger which has had a lot of QC issues lately. The savage mags are pretty weak - I dropped a loaded one last week on the floor and the ammo volcanoed out with the cheesy splines that hold the mag together failing. The gun itself is made to the sub $300 price point for sure. I had issues with failures to extract with domestic ammo ( European match ammo ran fine) but customer service was top notch. An email describing the issue sent to savage had spare extractor spring and other bolt parts in my hands in a week no charge. After some use a couple of the mags took a dump ( independent of the one mentioned above) quick email response- send them back will send you new ones which they did. Again no charge. You can’t get companies selling guns for 3x the price to be so responsive Accuracy wise, I have used the box stock savage to shoot perfect scores at silhouette matches, and have dope that gets me out to 300 yards- with match ammo ( SK or Eley) I can hit a 12” plate at 300 7/10 from prone off a bipod. Great performance for such a cheap gun. Also FYI Savage has a “ service program” vets/ first responders 30% off MSRP ordered direct from savage |

I certainly like the rifle and it's a great piece of history, but honestly I'm at that stage of life where if I'm going to get another gun, I'm okay with selling one off. The M44 in it's current form really doesn't fit any role for me, so I'd rather get it to someone who will appreciate it than chop it up so it fits my needs. |
