I just picked up a 2008 580 Tactical Mini 14 on trade and it has the ATI collapsing/folding stock. I'm not a fan of the stock so I guess I'll keep an eye out for a used standard stock, wood or synthetic. How can you tell an early stock from a later 580 up one? Thanks, Mike |

I think your odds of running across an incompatible stock, in that regard, would be rather small. There is a difference in the stock liners (the metal assembly at the magazine well) for the Mini-30 in 7.62x39 so that’d be more likely to be encountered. I believe you can just swap them for a 5.56mm stock liner, but I’m not certain. |

The early 181 and later stocks with the curved butt will hold the later 580 series Minis. Just know the later Mini's have a slightly wider dimension and they will need some "coaxing" to fit into the stocks. Which will make them a bit big for the earlier model Minis. I am talking about the birch stocks. I don't know if a later model Mini receiver will fit into a walnut or laminated stock as that wood is much harder than the birch. I'm sure with a big enough hammer you can make anything fit. kwg |

I know there are 2 different barrel thickness out there (skinny pre 580 and tapered 580 and up) Is there a mfg stamp, a marking, or measurement to delineate between stocks for pre and post 181 or a pre and post 580? I have a 580 taper barreled Tactical with that stupid useless plastic folding stock. If I grab a flea mkt stock off a table, what are the tale tale signs that I'm looking at a "early" vs "Late" or one for a tapered barrel vs a skinny barrel stock??? Bigger (wider, longer??) channel for the oprod the only difference? Wider channel for the tapered barrel?? I'll just go off the time honored tradition of buying something and beat'n the s**t outt'a it to make it fit. |

Just know that the 580 series Mini receivers are slightly wider and will resist going into a pre 580 series stock. Scrounge around the internet and you should find pictures of the 180 series stocks. They have a distinct appearance. Beyond that, I don't know of any other issues involving stocks other than what I have already described. kwg |
