How i built my own rotary tumbler (Page 3 of 31)
  Thinking about building one of these since i have no tumbler (new to reloading) and figured it is much cheaper than buying one i alredy picked up 2 separate styles of electric motors that i removed from a lifefitness treadmill but will end up <removed> also any advice on a possible desighn will be appreciated

If a guy wanted to make a drum out of steel, I wonder if you could coat the inside with a truck bedliner material to keep it from rusting?
You could weld angle iron in for paddles on a round drum to mix things or just make it flat sided like a thumler drum. Would it hold up to repeated use or would it eventually allow moisture to get underneath and flake off? Just a random though rolling around in my head on a rainy day.

Everyone that buys machine tools or machine parts seems to have good results. There is one vendor there that I have bought parts from, but directly from his business, not through ebay. Paypal ain't so attractive, however. |

I don't trust the system and don't care much for their anti-gun policy. The requirements to use Paypal look to me to be a little too invasive.
That's my perspective, right or wrong. I don't like going to the post office for money orders because it's 10 miles out of my way to the nearest office, but so far that appears to be a better option. |

Since i am doing all this work i decided i wanted a smaller container to do small batches
instead of using my 2.5 gallon 8" drum. so i took my original drum and cut it in half and made 2 1.2 gallon drums which is about the size of the thumler tumbler. so it should be good for 5lbs media and 3lbs cases and a gallon of water. these are made out of 6" sewer pvc. the bodies are 9 inches plus the ends makes it right at 12" tall. i have 2 paddles in each one mounted 180 deg from each other.

Well i got it all assembled. just have to add the cord and switch when i get home and i will take it for its maiden
tumble. i think it will be quieter because these bearings are a lot smother and quieter. i just have to trim the drive shaft and make some sort of cover to shield the pulleys so i don't catch something in them.

I didn't measure rpms lastnight with the small drum and this larger pulley but with the 3" i had on it the small drum was at around 100rpm. it looks like it is aroud 75-80 rpms right now my larger drum is around 65-70rpm. ETA your electric motor may be the 3450 rpm style motor so you would have twice the rpms i have. |

it will make a diff. it is the same as having a larger drive pulley, but it should only amount to about 10-20 rpm depending on shaft size. get me all your sizes and i will calc your ratios,

Motor 1750 rpm's, drive pulley 2", shaft pulley 5", each roller with hose is 1" drum with ends OD 6.5" The big diff. is your 2" drive gear. i calculate your drum speed of 108 rpm, your drive shaft speed is 700 rpm my drive shaft speed is 657 rpm and my drum speed with the 6.5 drum is 75.2 rpm If you just change your drive pulley to a 1.5 inch you will drop to 525 drive shaft rpm and 80 drum rpm. hope all this helps. ETA your 1in shaft size compared to my 3/4 translates to 25rpm diff. so if you ran my ratios exactly you would still be at 100 rpm versus my 75 rpm. |
