I finally got to fire my Barrett 82A1 and within the second magazine it stopped cycling.
I took it apart and the ejector was lodged back inside the bolt.
Some of the casings had the primer blow out the side (no pierced primers).
This gas had jammed the ejector back, shattered the ejector pin which caused it to be lodged inside the bolt.
I ordered the replacement ejector parts but now am starting to worry that the gas cutting on the bolt will cause issues.
Does this bolt need replaced? Will it cause issues with good ammo and primers now?
I sure learned my lesson about ammo. I think I will stick with commercial ammo and not remanned from now on!

Was that a brand new rifle or a used one?

Brand new, never fired until that day. It has a total of 16 rounds through it.

OUCH! Was the remanned ammo from a reputable decently sized company?

And yeah, I wouldn't shoot a .50 cal with that amount of bolt face damage.

I’d like to know this too.  I reload a lot of my ammo but I also have probably 3-400 rounds of Talon to still shoot.  Never had an issue with it to date, but…..

I would want to know why there is all that gas jet cutting around the primers and get that fixed before I continued to shoot it.   I'm not sure if each gas jet cut is one blown primer, or if each gas jet generates only one round hole, and the oblong holes are from multiple gas jet cuts.

In any case, something is seriously wrong and I would want to know what it is and have it fixed before I shot it again.

I'd think that someone reamed out the primer pockets improperly.

It was Talon manufactured in 2006.
Lake City 43 headstamp.
Looks like 4 rounds burst primers similar to this. This is the worst one.

Bolt still serviceable.  Never shoot low quality ammo in a .50 cal.

When I shoot a new gun, I always look at the brass. I would have stopped after the first round.

I will not fire ANY ammo in my 50 that I did not load myself.  This thread is one of the reasons why.

Primer pockets were not worked correctly.  Most likely over reamed or too much attention removing the primer crimp.

New 82A1 owner here... Perhaps I should start my own thread to ask, but the stuck ejector is relevant to me (though I didn't catch until re-reading, your ejector was busted )
I have run 60 rounds of new 2024 production PMC through my rifle so far.

I noticed I'm getting some ejector swipes on the cases, some deep enough to smear a little sliver of brass off the case. At the end of that 60 rounds I had a little piece of brass bind up the ejector to where it stuck back - it failed to eject the last case, and instead slammed it back into the chamber and folded the mouth over...

Took a brass punch and gave a few taps on the ejector until it popped back out (along with the offending sliver of brass). Seems fine now, but I haven't had a chance to shoot it anymore since that happened at the very end of my last outing.

I haven't seen anything else weird. No pressure signs on my primers, no cutting on the bolt face like the OP.

Are such minor issues to be expected when breaking in a new Barrett or should I be concerned at all? The ejector swipe seems to have lessened a little bit over time, but difficult to tell.

Talon is the only ammo that ever locked up my 82. Don't think I got pitting. What would happen in mine is that the case would get stuck but the Barrett being the beast that it is would rip the rim off and cycle enough to grab a new round which it would then full speed ahead right into the case that was stuck in the chamber. Super awesome because the battering ram action would kink the bullet in the neck and ruin the case so every time it happened the fired brass was ruined and a loaded round was ruined. Brass had to be hammered out with a cleaning rod.

Cheap ammo got expensive quickly. I think it was out of spec because it was tight in my Safety Harbor as well. The 99 eats it up like a champ.

Where are people even finding talon 50bmg ammo to break guns with?

We had a lot of military rifles come back into the shop with etching that bad around the primer area. We fired them like that. Didn't hurt a thing.

As long as the firing pin tip  isn't eroded and still has a nice radius to the tip, you're good to go.

When the firing pin hole gets eroded, that's when you start to run into problems.

What was the ammo? Factory? Or reloads?

If the bolt face etching is worrisome to you, Get the headspace number of the small diameter at the rear half half of the bolt. Should be around .008" sometimes smaller or larger. Prepare for sticker shock for a new bolt.

The ejector swipe on the 82A1 family of rifles is normal. The ejector spring is very strong and will cause a swipe.  Nature of the beast. Nothing to worry about.

It's still out there. We got 5 or 6000 rounds when I was at Barrett. It was crap ammo of the highest order. We ended up pulling it all down. Soaking the powder in oil and getting rid of it.
Popped the primers with a hammer and punch and crushed the shoulder of the brass with a ball peen hammer. Hauled it off as scrap.

Thanks for all of the replies!

Ammo was Talon from 2006, ran into some cans of it that about half of it fired good in Barretts before so thought it was pretty safe.
Lesson learned.

Firing pin looks fine so I'm going to get some better ammo and shoot it once my new ejector comes.
Nothing about this hobby is cheap but I sure believe you that it will be sticker shock!
I definitely don't want to buy a bolt unless I have to.

I've only shot PMC, LC, and Magtech (CBC headstamped).  I've only loaded a handful of rounds myself but didn't have any issues.

What is the caveat to reaming the primer pocket?  I have a special tool for it ( https://kmshooting.com/product/primer-pocket-correction-tool-50-bmg/ ) and I think I may have chamfered a little to seat the primer but I'll have to check those fired cases.  It was several years ago.
