I've liked the AUG style since I saw them in the 80's in Shotgun News, for 700 bucks or some such.

About 2010 or so, I bought a MSAR E4 to fill the AUG nitch - MSAR was up and coming then, and for awhile, had good customer service - then the drop off.  My rifle mostly works fine - I'm ready to rely on it then it get a nasty double feed or something similar.  It doesn't seem to work as well with PMags as with Lancers so that's what I use, but I deep down just don't trust it for anything but a range rifle.  Plus MSAR parts are no longer available.

So, I think I want to buy a AUG.  Here's what I think I want - correct me if some things are incompatible with each other:

5.56 version - I have a .300 BO setup in an AR config so don't really need that in an AUG.

AR mag version - have crates of AR mags and don't really want another supply chain item.

1-7" barrel version - seems to be what you want for 75 and 77 grain bullets

1/2" x 28 TPI thread - so I can put a Surefire Flash Hider on it (off my MSAR), and run a suppressor on the AUG.  I have a SF Micro suppressors (4" long) and it's a nice package with the MSAR.

Factory 1.5 optic - either the old school smooth side version, like I have on my MSAR, or the newer one with the rails on the side.  To me, an AUG has to have the classic factory optic look.  Not interested in the 3x version - too much mag for close encounters.

Black or green stock - either works, the green is the original, the black is the color of the shorty version from the 80's.  No to mud or white colors.

Later on I plan on picking up a 24" barrel, cuz "Oswald was a fag", and probably a 9mm conversion kit, as my range has steel plates but only for pistol round and it would be great to be able to use it there.  So, if there's a package with 16" and 24" barrels, as I've seen, I would be fine with buying that from the start.

So, does anyone sell such a set up, or will I need to buy a close but not quite setup, and then configure it as above?  I do want the 1/7" barrel - am I correct in saying the new ones coming off the assembly line are that twist, while the older ones are 1/9"?

Finally, what use if any can I get from my MSAR?  I'd read that the E4 stock can be used with the AUG - is that correct?  Something about the bolt hold open needing to be changed or fiddled with?  Is there any way to use the 1.5x scope my MSAR came with, or is it a completely different size and bolt pattern as the AUG?  Are there any other parts I can use from the MSAR E4?

Thanks,

A 9mm kit is the ultimate AUG accessory .

Never ask a man if he is from Virginia. If he is, he'll tell you. If he isn't, you don't want to embarrass him.

No one offers the exact configuration that you're looking for as a standard item.

They all come with 16" 1 and 9 twist barrels still. Eventually that will change because they are discontinuing the one in nine barrels but it won't be anytime soon.

Based on everything I know and my extensive experience and on what you said...

The first thing I would do is buy the 1/7 barrel that you want while it's still on sale right now as well as the 24". They're over $200 off right now compared to what they were most recently before this sale.

The next thing I would do is buy a heresy design 9mm conversion kit preferably a blem model or used one to save some money but be aware that the mags they ship with do NOT work and cause dangerous projectile set back and overpressure. Since you're going to have to use different mags anyways it doesn't matter which magazine version you get because they both don't work anyways. So just get whichever version is less expensive or more available.

There are several replacement or alternative magazine options that work well. My favorite is the mean arms EXO mag make sure you get to one without the ejector built into the mag.

This WILL work perfectly on your MSAR E4 (It will also work in your AUG as well)! I recommend turning your MSAR into a dedicated full-time 9mm. Especially with that MSAR 1.5x scope.

There is quite a lot of parts compatibility between the E4 and the AUG but the optics rail isn't one of them.

The last thing I would do is wait until after shot show 2026 to see some cool new stuff coming and then if that doesn't blow your socks off, Buy an A3 M2 NATO stock version but make sure it has the external bolt release which you can get for just a bit over $1600 new possibly less used.

Black is ok green is way better.

All the current us made nitride barrels are 1/2x28.

Out of curiosity do you know if an AR 9mm colt pattern magazine and adapter work with the Heresy conversion like new Steyr's Nato conversion? I've been tinkering with an M2 Nato AUG that I recently got, and Steyr's kit that uses colt mags intrigued me as I already have tons of colt 9mm mags.

There are ways that you can use some AR magwell adapters to use Colt 9mm mags in a nato stock for example Stern defense but you have to tweak and modify them.

If you want a 9 mil conversion and you want to use Colt mags just get the one from Steyr it's good to go 100% straight out of the box and you don't need to fiddle with tweak or modify it.

Also in regards to the Opie yes the MSAR E4 stocks work on an Aug and vice versa also.

A couple things to keep in mind when talking about the 9 mil conversion kits.

There are two broad categories of stire factory OEM kits those very recent ones that have the ejector on the front of the trigger pack and the previous ones that have the ejector on the mag adapter.

With the heresy kits aside from the fact that they are dangerous and don't work with the magazines that they ship with you need to keep in mind that the ejector is a plunger style ejector on the bolt.

Where the ejector is plays a big part on what magazines  and magazine adapters you can and can't use.

Also the more recent 9 mil kits with the ejector on the front of the trigger pack are kind of a pain in the ass to get installed and set up at first until you get the hang of it because you have to insert the trigger pack at an angle down and then back up in order to get the ejector and the bolt slot and so forth to line up.

Despite the fact that the heresy design 300 black and also the 7.62x39 are dangerous and don't work have severe projectile setback and overpressure and experience Barrel sleeve separation and gas leakage and the 9 mil kits are also dangerous and don't work and have dangerous projectile setback and overpressure... If you use different magazines completely changing the feed system then the heresy 9mm kits can be made to work and the fact that they have the internal plunger ejector gives you some cool magazine options.

Like I said before my favorite is the mean arms EXO mags.

I swear I recently saw pics and/or info that Steyr was working on a Colt 9mm mag version of the 9mm AUG.

Steyr sells a 9mm conversion kit on their store that uses Colt pattern mags for the NATO stock. I’m probably going to get one, I just hoped I could possibly save some money going with the Heresy kit but it sounds like just getting the Steyr kit is the easiest path.
