I currently have a Hogster optic that I am primarily using as a monocular. When I first got it I zeroed it on a rifle and played with it a tiny amount, but mostly it is used in the handheld roll. especially since I have moved far more rural. I'm gonna end up building a dedicated thermal rifle, but need to replace the handheld roll first. I am looking for a dedicated handheld, compact and easy to bring into action for bump in the night stuff and general playing. The longest measurement of my property is about 170 meters, bordered by road and thin brush on two sides and DENSE trees on two other sides that no thermal is going to see into. I see two items cropping up in searches and I'm hoping there is some experience here with them. #1 the FLIR Breach and #2 the Armasight Sidekick. At a similarly price point ($3k ish) it looks like the Breach has a 320 detector and the Sidekick has a 640. I've always thought the detector size was the major drive of the price and usefulness of a thermal, the 320 Sidekick is about a third the price. I know there are other aspects, like the side of the "lens" and the refresh rate, but both of those are similar. I'm wondering if there is another factor I'm missing, and in general input from users. The Sidekick Pro 640 is the best choice over the Breach. If this is for handheld use only, I’d take a hard look at the FLIR Scout Pro (19mm, 640). It is a 0.8x magnification with a wide 32 degree FOV which is perfect for your spot. A wide FOV is super nice for quick and efficient scanning. It has digital zoom also. Definitely not a Breach these days, maybe in 2019. Have you looked at the RH25V2? Much more capability- handheld, dedicated weapon sight, clip on, dual bridge, etc. Does "all the things" and doesn't need constant firmware updates, etc. Ran my older V1 for years and never did any updates nor had any issues whatsoever. V2 is even better and so far same thing, no annoying firmware updates or glitches. |
