HRT-556 or HRT-5K for 11.5" (Page 1 of 2)

going to be assembling an 11.5" before years end and I think I have narrowed my suppressor choice down to either the HRT-556 or the K version. Just wondering how the K will compare to the fullsize on an 11.5"? I know the fullsize will be better but at 6.4" long and 16oz it's quite a bit to add to the end of the gun. Right now the only 5.56 cans I have are Hux Flows on 16" rifles, these do what I need but I want a little bit more out of this future build. ETA. I was planning on getting the Dual Lok mount version and using the two port Paladin brake for no reason other than I don't like the look of the EZ-Brake it comes with. Probably 99% of the shooting will be suppressed but will shoot unsuppressed when I feel like making lots of noise and fireballs. |

There is more muzzle device flexibility in the HRT5, and on 11.5” and shorter guns having all the performance for flash and sound reduction is ideal, but that doesn’t mean you can’t run the short can and get acceptable results. A lot of people running ear protection only want sound down around 140DB and they can be happy with the shorter can. |

I have the hub K version and I love it. Not many rounds through it but it is quieter than my other longer larger diameter 3d cans. I’m probably going to try and get the full size before years end. 4.5” long and with how it performs on a 10.3” is crazy. Easily my best can purchase to date. |

I run ears all the time but in an emergency it would be nice to be able to pop a couple rounds off without issues. Main thing is to take the edge off so it's enjoyable to shoot with just foam plugs in. How much length does each model actually add to the barrel when used with the Dual Lok Mount? |

After a lot of pondering im going with the 5 AM over the K for my 11.5" I really like the compactness and saved weight of the K but according to GA the full size AM is over 6 decibles lower than the K on a 12.5". 131 Vs. 137.3 on the K. I know chasing decibles on a 5.56 and all that, but 6 DB is huge. If I was putting it on a 14.5 or 16 then Id probably go with the K. I am already set up with Plan A so going the Hub route which will save some length and weight. Plus I already have a Turbo-K if I really need something short and light. |
Doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you.

But the correct answer is… GET BOTH! |

Good choice..I was tossing up between the full size and the K and went full size also.. Love it. I had Plan B...but got the Dual lock and glad I did..I like it much better. |

I was paying razor-close attention to the ejection patterns and A/Bing between like 6 other 30cal cans, including other GA cans. Well, I JUST ORDERED the brand-new-today Optimus 6 AM and I’ll order the HRT7AM when it comes out too, lol. You guys are knocking it out of the park and making me broke - keep up the great work! |

Received my HRT 5K today. It’s the hub version. Goal was to keep the package as short as possible on my factory SBR MR556 A4 and gas out of my face. Only shot a few rounds through to see how to it handled the gas. Tried 55 grain, 75 grain and 77 grain bullet weights. Using the suppressed setting and factory gas block vent screw. 55 grain, brass was 3 o’clock. The heavier bullets were 4 o’clock. Outside the fact I have like $150 worth of different sized gas screws that are basically useless now, I’m very happy with how it handled the gas. As a cross dominant shooter (have to use left eye and hand for rifles), no gas to the face. I have an over gassed 16” Daniel Defense I’ll try it out on this weekend when I have more time and can fully test it. If it manages to tame the DD, I will be very impressed. I don’t even like shooting the damn thing suppressed because it’s miserable. |

Agreed and i switched to Plan B but there are varying specs and tapers to several different varieties of plan Bs systems. It kinda sucks in that regard. I used plan A forever and admittedly did switch to plan B with the FT556 for the wife's 11.5" pistol. |

Generally we’ve been pretty relaxed on that stuff. I would imagine it qualifies. Maybe check your junk mail or drop them another email to reopen that ticket. They do not take form ones, and the 50% is off msrp I believe. |

Trust me I have looked at this stuff ad nauseum, surefire is essentially the only can on the market that is 5" and has a deep enough distance to blast baffle to accommodate a 13.9" P/W build. I wanted to go HRT 5k so bad. I looked at gate lok, dual lok, hub with various adapters - which can and will work FWIW just with a caveat for me. There is a video of barrel and hatchet with a HRT 5K, surefire HUB, and 4 prong. Problem is the can becomes 6" with that HUB and you're adding a ton of weight plus $300. (WILL NOT ACCEPT: Closed Tine Flash Hider, FlashComp, 2.25″ Flash Hider, Tactical Comp, OTB Bayonet Flash Hider, or 2.75″ Flash Hider https://griffinarmament.com/product/dual-lok-hrt-5k-am-silencer/ The one maybe doable non-surefire combo i found was a IDG hesychia 556k with a revival defense HUB B and a blackout dynamics long flash hider, but when you realize that flash hider mounting interface to the barrel is essentially just one big spacer that is going to leave a large gap it negates the issue. Having said all this i wish i could go back, not order my FT556, and get a HRT 5K with the Zilch plan B for my 11.5" pistol. Haven't even shot the FT556 i just really like the HRT 5k |

Most of this can be remedied by SBRing the 13.9 or 13.5 or whatever you want. However this is my GPR and I want to be able to cross state lines without notifying the ATF. So 13.9" with a 5" can is about as short as I can conceivably go without SBRing. |

| Got to play around with the 5K on my 16” Daniel Defense. I got a little bit of gas to the face with it, but no where near what I was getting with like say a Ridgeback. Overall, I can actually shoot my Daniel Defense suppressed now and not have it be completely miserable. I’m very happy with this purchase to the point I may grab another one after Christmas. I would go ahead now, but I’m saving up to get into night vision. |

MS still has to change their state law so it's a moot point for me. I have SBRs, if it does change I'll just remove the weld and leave it as is. |

Is the description on the Griffin webpage for the 556 accurate that it gets a 12.5 down to 132 decibels? also considering a 556 versus a 556K for a.12.5 |

I think Austin mentioned in another thread or on youtube M4SDK AM will give comparable performance to HRT 5K in sound, back pressure, and flash mitigation. My 12.5" truck gun is going to have a M4SDK AM. However Hub alleviates a couple ounces and keeping it around 4.5" If it were me i'd go K can My 11.5" with a resonator K is bearable if needed without ear pro. Not ideal but that's the trade off for OAL. However if hearing is really a consideration, then go fullsize and be done, talking 1.5" i doubt in reality it makes or breaks anything other than better sound suppression. ![]() Griffin Armament: HRT 5K AM. So 132 is achievable. The can is a pretty performing can. If sound is really important, the Optimus 6 puts down similar to better numbers with lower average sound due to the larger volume, so its another option and it lowers pressure and flash signature even further as well. I feel like 90% of people get everything they need in an HRT556 AM, and the other 10% could get whatever they still wanted in the Optimus 6. For a benchmark I would rate the RC2 as more like 40% of people got everything they need. In other words a can that has a tremendous following is putting gas in a shooters face, and is louder on both sides of the gun, and has more flash signature, is heating faster, is heavier, has a more problematic mounting system (albeit one of the better mounts), and is substantially more expensive and requires separate purchase of a more expensive muzzle device. I think benchmarking is a good way to get perspective when considering a suppressor purchase. You can’t define great without framing “good”. |

Slight thread drift, but @Green0 could you give more detail comparing the Optimus 6 Mod 2 AM to the HRT 5.56 AM? I'm a lefty looking for a can to use on AR's ranging from 10.5 to 16" and on a 20" bolt gun. I already have a PRC 22, so the main use will be AR's and primarily the 10.5. I was all set to choose the hub HRT 5.56 AM, but the length and weight penalty for the Optimus looks small. How much difference should I expect in terms of shooter's ear sound and backpressure? Thanks in advance. |

Thanks in advance. Peak sound is similar (about 1.2db lower Optimus 6 muzzle). Average sound is lower, and bolt speed is lower. Given your emphasis is left handed it makes sense to consider them both and ask if a marginal difference in sound and pressure is worth the size, weight, cost difference for you? You don’t lose anything except the difference in price. You gain performance. Shooting them different days, indoors, I couldn’t tell a difference in much more than flash reduction standing in front of the muzzle, but the same day back to back the bolt speed was noticeable. The sound difference is slightly noticeable indoor. I would say it sounds great and runs like a huxwrx flow556k can, while having flash reduction superior to an RC4 is a pretty good description of the Optimus 6 AM. Maybe outside they get more separated, but I’ve only shot them indoor. Every day is some kind of engineering or logistical issue to support engineering or manufacturing, so its been hard to take a trip and get outside for the last 13 months. |

I consider the size and weight difference to be pretty marginal, and I'll forget the cost difference pretty quickly too. It sounds like I should be leaning toward the Optimus 6. I'll throw a bit of a plot twist into the mix: I don't currently have an FRT, but I'm considering one, which would primarily be used in the 10.5. Does that affect the answer at all? The 10.5" upper in question is a RH with an Aero AGB. I don't know the port diameter. It's a little hard to tame the gas with the Sandman S I currently have. If all else fails, I may go nuts with lefty uppers, side charging, piston system, etc. Historically, I haven't been able to get results I like with suppressed AR's when it comes to gas blowback. Slow fire is fine with a halfway decent tune, but most of them gas me out with rapid fire. That said, I haven't tried any of the newer tech yet. |
|
If the frt was a lot of the use case, there is an edge to HRT 556 AM with the better cooling and heavier thickness of parts in the smaller diameter unit. If cost is any object the FRT won’t be used enough to make that consideration weigh very heavily. I have a lot of machine guns but almost zero personal time, and they barely get fired. Things that get shot a significant amount are R&D guns, and testing guns. Machine guns can burn through $150 in less than 3 minutes even in an AR15 platform which isn’t designed for really hard full auto use. I would assume your lefty friendly characteristic is more important than hundreds of dollars in less than ten minutes. |

I just got out again with my HRT5k and didn't notice any gas even with hotter ammo. I'm left handed and don't think you'll need to bother with lefty uppers and all that. I'm a big fan of the 5k, its right on the edge of the weight I like. Especially on shorter guns, I don't want 6" and 16oz hanging on the front. Also, it looks like there are some weight discrepancies on the website for the Optimus 6 AM, at least the dealer portal. Attached File Attached File |

I only trust suppressor weights when I weigh them on my 2 calibrated scales. Rifles too, parts too, optics too. I quickly learned not to trust Manu’s weight specs. Not hard to deduce the O6AM will be on the heftier side, given its diameter. I still think it will be lighter than my Velos LBP. My O6M-HUB is in jail right now. Hopefully not long. I’ll post weight specs when it’s in my hands. I’ve got to-the-gram weight specs on a crap ton of new and old cans in case anybody needs them.
