OK I have a spare room in the basement (basement is finished) and my kids at the age I need to start properly securing things. Of course I know a thief could just kick through the drywall but with the alarm, dogs and cameras Im more worried about the kid. The door on the room is just a flimsy hollow door I could kick through much easier than the drywall. Im debating a vault door and don't mind spending a couple/few grand. Any suggestions on options or other ideas? Thanks!! ETA after talking to a few people seems a steel door is the best option but still would love to hear if others have suggestions |

I would just do a solid wood door and a dead bolt. Anything more substantial isn't really going to make a difference if the walls are just drywall. Personally, I think concealing the entrance as a bookcase or something is more effective than a vault door that screams, there's valuable stuff in here. |

You should consider upgrading the walls themselves, so someone could not kick thru it at least. Expanded sheet metal screwed to the studs, chain fencing, steel sheet metal, etc. There are quite a lot of ways to harden a room, at least so someone would need serious tools to cut into in. You could get real serious and do a masonry wall with rebar as well. No point doing a real vault door unless you have serious wall protection. However you could get one of the relatively cheap vault doors that Hornady/SnapSafe is selling, which isn’t as heavy as a more expensive vault door, then harden the walls, and be sitting a lot better than just a drywall enclosed room and basic door. |

I live here, don't know there is a door, because it's hidden??? That makes me happy. Steel doors with good locks are a decent 2nd choice. We've installed those in armoured connex's holding well over a million $ of dirt leveling computers on remote jobsites. Behind seriously reinforced connex doors tho. I have a lot of guns behind a door that doesn't even lock. But nobody even knows it's there
