I'm in the beginning phases of building vertical gun racks, I'm trying to figure out the barrel rest. Was thinking of a strip of leather on the wood, but worried it might affect bluing over a long period of time. Any negatives with bluing against neoprene or a faux leather? |

I built some temporary storage racks for a few rifles. I used suede for the barrel rests. I honestly don’t know how it would do long term but it’s in a climate controlled environment so I’m not super concerned. Attached File |

| I just went with the bare wood and have had no trouble over many years. I also recessed a small magnet into the wood where the barrel rests. That helps hold the gun in place (if it doesn't have a wood or plastic handgaurd where the barrel rests in the rack). I just drilled holes the diameter of the magnets and epoxied them in place. They are recessed so they don't contract the gun. It's much better than gravity alone, again depending on the gun and the fit, though. |
