I found a gunsmith (07/02 SOT) that advertises installing short barrels and other gunsmithing services for a particularly niche firearm in which barrel installation is too difficult to be done with everyday tools by myself. Could I: 1) Form 1 my receiver and get it engraved 2) Mail it off to the gunsmith to install the barrel and other gunsmithing services (e.g fitting parts and assembly) The gunsmith seems to think this is kosher but I couldn't find any definitive resource that says if this can be done on a F1. |

I've never seen any guidance from the ATF on the subject. I know some gunsmiths won't touch it unless you shorten the barrel below 16" first. That way you make the SBR, and they are just fixing it. Other gunsmiths have no problem cutting it down if you have the paperwork. If the gunsmith is comfortable doing it, get the form 1 approved and ship it to them. When I had my MP5 shortened I shipped them the gun without the stock, they removed the 16" barrel and installed the 8" barrel. Then I put the stock on it. But that was more for they didn't really need the stock and it was easier to ship without it. |
