| I was reading the rules about python hunting in Everglades National Park. Since Florida has no hunting season open during the summer, people doing the Challenge must use either a captive bolt gun or an airgun. So are those guys carrying an air rifle or is there an air pistol that can penetrate a pythons skull for a quick kill? |

In Florida, python hunting is open year-round on private lands and on 32 designated Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)-managed lands. There isn't a traditional hunting season with specific dates for pythons, unlike other game animals. Everglades National Park is not managed by the FWC, though, so you'll have to hunt elsewhere. A 30 caliber air rifle only has 30 ft-lbs of muzzle energy? I guess that's better than looking like Ghostbusters carrying a tank on your back with a captive bolt gun. All that careful and humane snake killing reminds me of the coyote problem in SC. Too little too late! |

At very close range (under ten yards) you need a low power scope on the airgun which can focus to five yards or less. Or, you can use irons, but you need to know where the pellet will strike relative to the sights at various distances. At close ranges, the difference in points of impact can be quite significant. At those close distances, just about any .22 to .30 rifle will do. The Hatsan spring gun is going to be harder to shoot well than a PCP, or pump up gun. Since you are unlikely to be shooting more than five at any one time, a PCP with a hand pump to fill it would be my first choice. For a budget PCP airgun that performs way better than its price suggests, the JTS Aricuda should be on the short list. |
