I've just started doing some reading, and found some references to firearm scopes not being rated for air guns. Will a scope that handles a 7mm mag really be ruined by a springer air rifle? |

Yes, it's possible, due to the method used to mount the reticle. The spring and piston reverses the recoil of the rifle. I sold a 300S that uses an action that moves to counter recoil. I have some regret as it was accurate, but I didn't care for chambering a pellet in a break barrel gun. I kept a Walther LGR. Air rifle scopes are not necessarily extravagantly expensive. |

I spent the last four days researching scopes and it will make your head spin. Some questions for you and comments: - what gun are you mounting the scope onto? If it's a PCP or pneumatically charged gun, you might not have as big of an issue like you will on a springer. - lets assume springer. Do you know the energy of the gun, or, ft/lb engery (FPE)? I have a Beeman R7 .177 and the energy at the barrel is 4-7 FPE depending on pellet. I also have a Weihrauch HW97 .22 with muzzle energy of 14/16 FPE. - What is your budget? Include $20/$80 for rings or one-piece mount. - So, I needed to run a fully dedicated springer scope on the HW97 (Hawke Airmax 4-12x40) AMX but chose the Hawke 2-7x32 Vantage for the R7. - I also bought a really nice mount for the HW97 which is reported to have dampening built in. Sportmatch DM-60 Damps ($72) - Googling will give you some paths to follow depending on what gun you have (from people a lot smarter than me). Look for reviews and input from sites like Airgun Nation and Gateway to Airguns. Some stuff I learned? - Leupold and Nikon (when they still made them) with EFR rating can stand up to springers - Hawke Airmax line, but there are some haters out there - UTG Leapers, did not like the "36 color" lighted reticle and is reported to have heavy/thick recital lines - This scope and mount gets a ton of positive reviews for holding up to magnum (17 FPE+) air rifle. I couldn't buy in but it's only $80 and a 4-12x40 Here on Amazon - You will read a lot of "I heard Burris, BSA, Vortex, ect" are springer rated... Heard and verified are two different things. - Lots of love for SWFA fixed zoom scopes. Fixed = less moving parts to subject to spring recoil. - Read up on First Focal Plane and Second Focal Plane. I went SFP. Good sites explain what it is and what you might want. SFP is more common but FFP is catching on. All about sight picture and if your hunting, target, etc. - Probably want a scope that focuses down to 10m (yards) - There are a ton more, it's a rabbit hole Others with more knowledge will chime in, hope this helps. |

Mattgunguy came by last night and gave me a Crosman 1000X, .177 pellet rifle, with a Center-Point scope.  I just took one shot, and later today I'll work on making sure that it's sighted in. I don't do as well with round scopes, and was planning to put an old/extra Redfield Widefield on here, but I don't want to risk destroying it. I'll stick with what's on it.   |

now get yourself a homemade pellet trap and see what kind of groups it shoots. Look up "artillery hold for springer". It shows how to hold the front stock on a springer for best accuracy. here is one |

I set up a target (cardboard box, filled with firewood) 20 yards from my bathroom window. I took several shots and couldn't even hit the box, so I started shooting at a rock that was about half way out. That showed me that I was hitting very high. (Closer to the rooster, than to the rock). I adjusted quite a bit down, and a bit right, and hit the box a couple times at the top/left corner.  I kept adjusting, and once I got on the box I was able to adjust in better.  Once I got close on the left target, I switched to the right one to get it in there better.  That's about as good as I can get, kneeling on the bathroom floor and propping my hand on the window frame. I started shooting small rocks, and could easily hit a squirrel in that range, but I'll finish sighting in another day. Those phone pics aren't too good, so after I was done I took a couple pics with my real camera.   Total adjustment, I would guess 7 complete turns Down and 2 or 3 turns Right. |
A little update; I've tried three different brands of pellets that I bought, and a friend on here sent me several others to try. I've found these two to be the most accurate and consistent, and some marauding squirrels have been dispatched. I think the RWS might have a slight edge in accuracy, but the red tips on the Gamos make loading easier for me. (Without putting my reading glasses on).  I appreciate all the help getting me rolling on this, and I'm happy with the results now that I've had time to test and adjust. The artillery grip is so different.  |
