Anyone own one of Larry's 50cal rifles? Have you been pleased with it? Any Do's and Don'ts you may suggest? I'm interested in a Shorty. |

I have one, but haven't fired it. I bought it without a stock, and have procrastinated in equipping it. He sells bare actions for around $850. I had a surplus light M2 barrel I considered mating to one, and called to ask about thread specs in the action. He said the threads are the same as the M2 barrel, and that he was already set up to do exactly what I was planning, and offered to install and headspace for something like 25 bucks if I sent him the barrel which I immediately accepted. He also offered to thread the muzzle, but I decided to try it bare first. He was pretty covered up at the time, and it did take a while, but I don't hold that against him and would gladly deal with him again. He even refinished the entire barrel and action to match and engraved the caliber markings on the barrel. Not having a brake, I wanted a heavy stock/chassis so that excludes their wood stock, and I'm not crazy about the tactical stock either. The action footprint is so simple, I planned to mill my own (heavy) stock from aluminum bar. So far I have not found any commercial stocks inletted for this action, have not made my own from bar stock, and have not bought a heavy stock blank to inlet. I was actually considering starting a thread to ask about stock options I'm not aware of. I see a a number of competition shooters use this action mounted in nice looking stocks. Otherwise, I have no other info to relate about the rifle. |

The receiver uses the same thread diameter and pitch as the MG barrel. Lathe work is required to headspace. I appreciated how Larry was happy to indulge the idea of sticking a machine gun barrel in one of his actions and made it happen. I'm not sure who else might be up for that. As far as the action, it feels fine, not broken in of course. My initial impression from a few dry fires is that the trigger feels pretty good as well.

I haven't found anyone who makes an fitted stock or chassis for it other than OEM. McMillan does sell large 50 sized stocks but non of them fit this action. They offer a flat top stock you inlet yourself for around $1300. The stock I planned to make would pretty much be a copy of an AR50 type. I can buy a lot of aluminum and paint for $1300. |

I bought a barreled action and built a stock, bought it from guy on this forum who bought it but gave up on the project Great gun but remember the bolt has to be pulled out to put a new rnd on the bolt The trigger is awesome, guessing a pound or less. @Clint50 |

I acquired a used State Arms Shorty from a friend in the Twin Cities and used it for many years as my "Shooter-50". The 30 inch SS barrel had many rounds thru it but served its purpose and many new shooters had their first 50-GRIN experience with it. The owner of ShootSteel.com used it for testing his AR-500 targets shooting ball rounds as close as 300 yards to determine the proper material thickness for his targets and his recommendations. Later I cut the barrel down to 16.5 inches and fitted it to the Shorty action and installed an AR-50 muzzle brake. My chambering reamer cut a near Match grade but 0.557"neck diameter, so lots of surplus rounds would fit BUT NEEDED measurement prior to loading into rifle. I shot it locally at a covered range near Oakdale MN on the 25, 50, and 100 yard ranges. Shot it standing shoulder fired. The muzzle blast was deafening requiring earplugs AND earmuff protection. I had acquired two Feddersen 50CAL barrels of Chrome Moly construction with a 1:15 twist. I used one on my AR-50 and fitted the other to my State Arms Shorty action and included mounting of the AR-50 brake. Then I bedded this into a Tom Manners Carbon Fiber stock using DevCon 10110 for bedding material. Since the Shorty action is only 4" long, I bedded 6" of barrel diameter ahead of action to better support the 34" 1.750" dia Feddersen barrel and AR-50 muzzle brake. After shooting a Match or two with it, I sold it to a close friend Jim Roberts in 2015, who shot from a wheel chair in his first Match. Long story short, Jim used it in 2018 at the FCSA World Championship Match near Raton NM NRA Whittington Center to shoot a 6.625" 5-shot group followed up by a 2.438" 5-shot group which was the smallest of the match and within 1/2" of being a FCSA World Record. Jim died 12-12-21. A fellow FCSA friend made a great plaque with Jim's picture and achievements included, which we mounted to the inside north wall of the Eagles Nest of Whittington Center. Jim's rifle was sold to a new shooter from near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Hopefully we will see him compete soon. |
