I have this sporterized k98 I bought from a family friend, and apparently his uncle brought it home after WW2 and sporterized it. Anyways, its in beautiful condition and shoots well, even though most people hate sporterized rifles. Whoever did the work installed a lyman peep sight in the rear. Problem is, when I bottom it out all the way, I'm still hitting like 6 inches high at 100 yards. There physically isnt much room for the peep to drop even if I reinstalled and tapped it into the reciver. I'm thinking the easiest fix might be building up the front sight? But im unsure how to go about that. Would like to kill some deer with this thing. Attached File |
I did this with my Rugers, I can't see your front sight but you might be able to do the same thing. I had the blade milled off and a dovetail cut, you can chose from many front blades. In the second picture you can see the rear sight all the way down from trying to sight in some 320 grain cast bullets, pic was taken before I shot the gun after the install.

I used that on my Swedish Mauser to do the same. Mine is (or was) in military trim but I don’t shoot at 300m all the time but 100 or 200 so I got the taller sight and filed it to zero at 100. Of course I saved the OEM front for collector purposes. Well you already got it out but dovetailed parts normally come off to the right side, ie the standard ejection side is how I think of it. They go in from the right as well and driven to the left. File it slowly, test on the range. Touch up with a cold blue like Oxpho blue also available at Brownells our generous and benevolent overlords. Bring your hammer and brass drift punch to the range to adjust windage. Heck you can file the last little bit at the range too and just use black sharpie to temporarily dull the bare metal shine from filing. Marbles and I think Brownells both have sight height change calculators to get you close to the right height. |
The only hyphenated names I like are cartridge names......30-06, 30-40, 38-55 etc.

| This is off subject a little. I have a k98 that I inherited ww2 bring back. It has a 6 x 42 leupold scope on it. It is more accurate than my other rifles. I hand load for the 8 x 57mm. I have been using 180 gr Nosler BT or 180 gr Combined technologies Winchester bullets. Gets a little over 2600 fps and deadly. Enjoy your new to you rifle. Good, reliable rifle. I believe seller & bellot sell 175 gr preloaded 8 x 57 mm JS ammo. I don't use 150 gr. They are eratic for accuracy. |
