Lots of folks use tape. Most of use the clear type for sealing envelopes or such. Maybe there are best brands for such but all of them seem to work OK for me.
Then we come to industrial purposes, as in actually sealing ductwork and so forth. I'm sure some tapes are better than others for that purpose. I don't know which to recommend. But I actually have some on-hands experience with tape. I worked for many years at Electric Boat, and we used Nashua brand Green Tape by the mile. It was a tightly woven fabric, with plastic on the outside, and sticky on the inside. It would hold almost anything together, and even the industrial sandblaster guy had to go over it a few times to remove it. That's the guy in a positive pressure air suit inside an enclosed booth. If the nozzle hit bare skin, bones would be exposed within seconds. That sort of industrial sand blasting; Electric Boat is hard core. Bare metal makes for good welds. The same tape is called "100 MPH tape" by the Military. It's GOOD Stuff. Not worth wasting on lesser purposes, but when you need GOOD stuff, Nashua Tape has no peer. The usual tape seen in Harbor Freight and other stores is so completely inadequate as to beggar comparison. The "reinforcing threads" are about 1/8" apart, and made of some weak, thin material. I've seen such tape deteriorate simply from exposure to sunlight alone. Turns to dust, with a few "reinforcing' threads blowing in the wind. Pitiful, and totally inadequate. The REAL DEAL is basically a tightly-woven fabric--looks like cloth in good light-- and tougher than General Sherman in a bad mood. Sticks like a bad habit, even in the cold. Use the cheap crap as appropriate, but know that there is the real deal: Nashua Tape. There is no substitute, in my personal experience. IMHO, life is too short to use inferior materials. Doing so always comes back to bite. Anyone in the Mil, or who has worked at EB will back me up, I'm sure. So endeth the lesson. Thanks for reading. Disclaimer: no financial interest. |

Nashua makes excellent high quality tape. Some of the best available. Their Silver back dust tape is the stickiest I've ever used. It will not unstick from itself, gotta cut it off. USA made in Nashua New Hampshire! I've never used the green back type you speak of but I'm intrigued and will find me some.

Try some "gaffers" tape. Varying quality but good stuff. I think the real deal gaf tape is about $70 for same size roll of duck tape.
My recollection(probably wrong  ), Duck tape was a brand name, Duct tape was a mispronunciation of duck as real duct tape was a metallic tape for joints in HVAC ducts.

I wished someone would solve this.
I have a roll of real deal .mil 100mph tape. Made in 1989, it still works like day one. I've never, ever, ever found anything that compares to this stuff, gorilla tape included. Buyer beware though, I've been in armories where their tape wasn't the good stuff. Green, but not the real deal. Cheaper duct tape, the adhesive migrates off of the substrate, more so in hot and humid climates, and especially in sunlight. Gaffers' tape is like the motion picture tape equivalent of velcro... lol |

I get gaffer tape from my brother in LA. It is usually $20-40 a roll. It is removable. There are a lot of different types of duct tape and Nashua makes a bunch of different ones. Foil, mastic, and more normal looking but very sticky are just some of the types. Originally Posted By 35mm_Shooter:

| I have a big roll of Nashua 100 mph tape. I have an animal carrier that was given to me years ago and broke shortly afterward, it's been held together for probably 10 years of heavy use with that tape. Latest use is to hold together a cracked plate glass window till I get a new pane. I have a spool of Nashua 550 parachute cord I bought maybe 20 years ago too, it makes the common stuff found in all the hardware and sporting goods stores look like cheap shit. |

I actually found a roll of this stuff in the middle of the road one day when walking across the street. I have used it for a lot of stuff and after reading this post looked at the inside. Sure enough it was Nashua brand silver tape. Almost like someone took very sturdy tin foil, and applied super glue to one side of it

Any of the linked versions of the mil-spec tape will be roughly equivalent. One might be a tinch better than another, and I'd want to see a reasonably good comparison test in order to settle on one or the other as THE best. Any of the Nashua or similar tapes that are mil-spec will probably do, and be miles ahead of almost anything else. So, you see, the brainpower that is Arfcom has come up with at least three solutions, by my counting. And not to my surprise. On aircraft we use "Speed Tape" by 3M.
It's basically super heavy aluminum foil with adhesive backing. If you burnish it down well on a clean dry surface it will hold up to jet cruise speeds for quite awhile. |

Folks would take so many rolls of it that the tool crib would wind a small 2" roll for you using a large drill/bit.
The tradition when you ever got a hold of a roll was to use half, then flatten it and tuck it in your waistband at the end of the day. Life in the yard. |

Is it Nashua 398? 357? Polyken 231? I can tell you it is NOT 3M Extreme Hold Duct Tape

I have never seen the green stuff, but we had some red, what was known as High Pressure Tape on board ship.
That shit was the strongest, stickiest tape I have ever seen. Pretty sure you could have patched a torpedo hole with it and get the ship back into the fight. |
| Where has this thread been all my life??? I've used miles of duct tape at work. That crap from Ace Hardware that I've been using is just that, crap. Weak and won't stick long. If it does stick the adhesive turns to powder in no time. |

| EB Green...now that's a name I haven't heard in a long, long time. Pops was in the Navy and used to bring that stuff home from time to time. It put all other tapes to shame. I remember getting some of the glue on my fingers as a kid; took some serious scrubbing to get it off! Now, I'm on the search for it! |
