I was looking for a bolt gun in 5.56/.223 that would use AR mags. I ended up buying a Ruger American Ranch in .556 and put it in a Magpul Hunter stock with an AD Arms billet cocking piece & YHM Phantom flash hider. This will be mainly for 100-150 yards from a bench as a fun gun and for predator control. I have a Bergara B14 HMR for long range use. Where I am undecided is the optic and mounts. I have [3] Trijicon Credo 1-6's on AR15's and really like them. For this rifle I was thinking a Credo 1-4 or a local GS has Leupold Freedom 1.5-4 Pig PLEX'S in stock for a good price. Also thinking about replacing the factory picatinny rail with Talley lightweight or Leupold Backcountry one piece mounts. Have no real use for the picatinny rail and would be able to mount the scope lower with a cleaner look with the one piece mounts. Your thoughts? |

Why are you self-limiting to a 1x low end and that small objective for a benched bolt gun? I’d rather shoot a basic 3-9x40 and have that higher end and larger objective if not something even bigger like a 4-12 or 4-16. 1x makes a lot of sense for a working AR where you might need the 1x. But on a fun gun? Maybe if I had an extra one lying around. But to go out and buy? |

I want to keep the physical size of the optic small, I have an extra Leupold 3-9x40 on hand and think it looks out of place on this rifle with the 16" barrel. Don't need higher magnification than 4x for the distances I am shooting. This will not be a bullseye gun. Just a general purpose, hit a 5" circle @ 100 yards gun. |

I have the same rifle; they are great rifles that shoot well above their price point. My rifle, with handloads, is sub-moa out to 400 yards. I have an Athlon Midas Tac 5-25x50 on it. It's a large scope, but it doesn't look out of place on the rifle. If you truly want a small compact optic that is good for your intended range of less than 150 yards, and you only need to be able to hit a 5" circle at 100 yards?...how about a Trijicon RMR mounted on the picatinny rail. Or maybe an Aimpoint T2, Holosun AEMS, or an EoTech if you're feeling a little crazy. All have 2 MOA dots...150% more accuracy than you requested. |

Thanks for the replies. I had a Leupold Freedom 1.5-4 Pigplex in Talley one piece mounts a couple years ago on a 10/22. It was a good combo. Currently use the Talley's with a Leupold Freedom rimfire 3-9 on a Ruger LVT. And have used them on Tikka T3's before. Always liked them. Have some red dots [3 - Holosun HS515GM's, a 403R and an Aimpoint T2] but my eyes are getting bad and I have a hard time seeing them at any thing over 50 yards. I took one of my Trijicon Credo1-6's and turned it down to 4 power and for my uses I think 4 power would work for me. I would be fine with the 1-6 but trying to wind up with less than $1,500 in this combo. I can get the 1-4 for $350 less than the 1-6. I might try one of the Swampfox Arrowhead 1-6's, they are 10.6" OAL which is the max length I would want to go with and it would save me $400 from the Credo 1-6. Just wish the Swampfox had capped turrets as I will never dial. Rifle will only be shot about 75 rounds a year. |

OP, what is the intended purpose of this rifle? If multiple purposes, list most frequent use first. A 16" barrel will, all other things being equal, reduce the velocity of the bullet and thus the bullet's effective range compared to, say, a 20" barrel. All things considered, a scope on a rifle with a 20" barrel could likely be of higher magnification than a scope on a 16" barrel. What is the Rate-Of-Twist of your barrel? A faster ROT (1-7") would tend to do better with heavier bullets, while a slower ROT (1-12") would probably do better with lighter bullets, such as .55gn. Even so, some experimenting with ammo and bullets might be advantageous. The quality (uniformity) of the ammo will probably make an observable difference. Most milsurp ammo is about 2 MOA, and quite a bit of it does not rise to that level of accuracy. If you will be shooting on the target range exclusively, consider optics with fine cross-hairs. Conversely, for field use, consider thicker cross hairs. The quality of the optic also plays a part. IMHO, a high-quality 4x may be more useful than a lousy quality 6X. Also suggest visiting an eye doctor and mentioning that you are a rifle shooter who "may" have certain vision requirements. I wish you the best of luck with your eyes. I had dual cataract surgery, and now see 20/20 at distance, although I still need "reading" glasses for close distances. This sort of thing ought not make a difference with most conventional optics, with the possible exception of RDS and other, similar sights mounted close to the shooter. If you have some optics that you cannot use effectively, at least for the foreseeable future, then consider selling them and raising the budget for your optic. Thanks, Once this is sighted in it will probably get shot less than 75 rounds a year. Too many rifles and not enough time. I purchased this mainly as a non evil option to use my AR mags and ammo. I went ahead and bought a Trijicon Credo 3-9x40 today, if I don't like it on there I will put it on something else. Thanks for the replies. |
