Digital battle is heating up and China is pushing the tech. At this rate in 12 months we might see digital match G3 analog at half the price. ![]() The Best Digital Night Vision ?? ADNV G14P2 |

Very cool! Thank you for bringing this to our attention! I found a comparison video that also includes "real" analog nightvision tubes. The comparison starts around 2:40 www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdNhbM4IDVE The main drawback - besides 3h realistic battery life seems to be the that a single light bright light source is "autogating" the device, so you loose any information in darker areas. The price is tempting though with no tube to burn out. Especially for larping / airsoft / dog-walking... |

Yes , Not sure if I would want one in combat based on the unknowns of durability, electro-interference etc. But for a LE dept strapped for cash or gen issue to patrol officers it might be a real value. Avg. Joe Sheep dog guy on a budget. It gives acceptable night vision better than no night vision. Form factor is a little clunky but that too will get better with these units in time. Even Sionyx missed the mark on that note a little. I am hoping that Sionyx has something in the wings to beat this in a goggle form. I would think with planned obsolescence they would, China may be forcing their hand early to come out with it. Odd how a COM country isn't into stringing the buyer along with small updates over yrs. while having improved models A B C on the self waiting for sales to drop of the previous platform before releasing the next better widget. In this case China is in full-on development mode and are going to steal...I mean "earn" the markets money by producing a better product out from under the others sooner rather than playing the aforementioned slow poke game. I think we can all agree the tech is out there its just a matter of our Gooberment allowing civies to have nice things. This should indicate that our potential adversaries aren't in the stone age of electro-optics and they them selves are using/building some nice stuff better than what we can even buy today. A step above this unit would be a game changer Gen 1 and 2 would possibly be obsolescent despite battery drain.

I've seen so many claims along the lines of digital NV finally eating analog's lunch that I'm almost numb to it. Who else remembers the whole Supervision thing 17ish years ago? Anyway, I'd love to see this actually come to fruition so civilian NV systems can leverage digital/computing advances and reduction of SWAP. I'm not holding my breath, and my good ole' tube systems will continue to soldier on, including tonight |

Who else remembers the whole Supervision thing 17ish years ago? I *had* a Supervision! Now, to be fair, someone gave it to me, I wouldn't have spent dollar one after looking through that thing. But digital is getting a lot better. I've been kind of interested in the falling price/rising tech intersection for years. (I wrote the article that kind of kicked off that giant Sionyx Post here years ago. Sionyx sent me a preproduction one to test out.) Strike Industries has been teasing a unit on their designer's sneak-peek Instagram account this month (I haven't seen it yet) but a friend that has tells me its super crisp focus compared to a normal PVS14. I think the tech is getting there, but the form factor should be different. Making a CMOS system gives you the option to move the battery and processor to the rear of a helmet, and just have a little sensor-cam up front. Instead, Sionyx hung a videocamera off your forehead. Then for round 2, they aped a PVS14 instead of leveraging the abilities... :/ |

What he said. I hear this every few months. Somebody gets on here and kicks the can over about digital coming "so close" to parity with I2. I will believe it when I see it. And for sure, why do they keep copying the analog form factor when you can put that weight in back. Kel I hope you're doing well these days my friend. I owe you several beers for the SWAT party invites @ SHOT. Those were a hoot. |
It's all about the fiddle factor.

Bookmark this thread. cnoct sounds like Carpe Nocturnum on YT, and compasscall on IG - who is (IMO) the defacto guru on digital. CNOCT on Digital Newcomers Hopefully he will continue the thread when he gets his. |

Seems like these guys are talking apples n oranges. Guy states that it's not fair if you don't turn your gain way down to zero, when comparing to digital. Don't get me wrong. I would love to see digital really come into it's own some day. But it ain't today. Watching digital improve is like watching paint dry. |

A PVS-14 on zero gain has a system gain of around 100~200... Not very much. That's Gen1 territory - not even Gen2. The old Armasight Spark Core could meet that requirement. If that's correct, then these devices are at Gen1 level performance. |

It has an f/1.05 lens... that definitively helps a lot!! The same as the PVS-5C Gen2... wonder how a filmless PVS-14 with an f1.05 lens would perform... unfortunately the 5C lens doesn't focus to inifity on the Gen3 tubes due to the focus point being a bit farther away due to the PC being behind a glass window and not a fiberoptic window. I own 5C monocular so I know... I've tried... :( Wonder if that G14P2 lens can be put on a PVS-14... All in all, myself being a "digital is trash" person, this is certainly the first real improvement I've seen over the other digital stuff in a very long while... and this I can see myself getting one... but then you can see the price tag sort of reflects the performance increase too, so I'll probably stick with analog for the time being. I wonder what the spectral response of the sensor is... if its also SWIR capable (even up to 1200, 1300nm) then it doesn't need as much gain as the Gen3 IIT due to seeing more light... so, who knows... The short runtime seems less of a drawback once you account for the better low light performance and increased FPS and not melting the tube with bright lights... etc. Thanks for posting about this. Saw this necropost. I have a prototype / variant of the ADNV G14 that I've been messing around with the past year. It's surprised me, it's pretty good compared to the two PVS14s I have (one USGI, one commercial, both Gen III). I don't use it very often though, because the rectangular screen/display vs. the round PVS14 eyepiece isn't as suitable for helmet/head mounting. It's also not weapon-mountable. I've still put it on .22lrs, but the display is cockeyed at like 30° when it's mounted with PVS hardware. Obviously a round eyepiece doesn't care about orientation of the unit itself: -14's are symmetrical and forgiving no matter what.) That said, the digital unit's picture is nice and sharp, light gathering fine. (For that matter, whether you see it as a pro or a con, the focus is actually precise enough that I feel it needs refocusing more than the -14s, but when it's dialed in, it's sharper, when it's not, it's less forgiving than the -14's.) |
