I wanted to share a fairly positive customer service experience I recently had with Desert Tech. I picked up a used 6.5 CM WLVRN and noticed that it had a few of the early production QC issues (also an early SN as well). The frame-to-receiver pin had a bit more play than I thought it should, and the center takedown pin was similarly loose. I also noticed consistent case head swipes on the very bottom of the rim when shooting suppressed. It didn't seem to matter which suppressor I used—a flow-through, traditional baffle can, or a hybrid design all produced the same result on the lowest suppressed+ setting. I recorded a video showing the issues and sent it to Desert Tech's warranty department. They agreed to take a look, so I shipped the rifle to them around June 26. It arrived back at my door on July 23, so right around a month including shipping both ways. Here's what they did: Replaced the center takedown pin to eliminate the wobble. Replaced the lower polymer stock panel to improve the fit between the upper and lower receiver and eliminate the remaining movement. Installed the latest revision bolt carrier. Replaced the gas valve with the updated vented 20" 6.5 CM version. Replaced the piston. According to Desert Tech, they installed the vented gas valve because I mentioned in my video that I wanted to make sure the rifle wasn't over-gassed while shooting suppressed. They explained that the updated vented valve is designed to work with a wider range of suppressors than the original unvented version. While comparing the updated rifle to my other WLVRN, I noticed the revised bolt carrier group is slightly different. The new BCG is just a touch shorter overall and weighs about an ounce more than the original one in my other rifle. The shorter carrier also leaves a small gap at the rear of the ejection port when the action is in battery. My original WLVRN's carrier sits nearly flush in this area, so it's an obvious visual difference between the two revisions. I don't know whether this was an intentional design change to work with the updated gas system or simply part of the revised carrier geometry, but it's interesting to see that Desert Tech made more than a minor revision. Between the updated BCG, vented gas valve, and piston, it looks like they've made some meaningful changes to the operating system. Overall, I'm pretty happy with how they handled everything. Communication was good, they addressed every issue I brought up, and they proactively updated several components to the latest revisions instead of only fixing the specific complaints. It's nice to see a manufacturer stand behind one of their rifles, even though I wasn't the original owner. I haven't had a chance to get it back to the range yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the updates perform. If everything works as intended, I'd consider this a very positive warranty experience. Right side is the new BCG  ,  , , Right is the 6.5 Adjuster. Very neat, thanks for sharing! Kind of sounds like you got a brand new gun out of the deal. The new BCG is interesting, adding an ounce to slow down the bolt carrier is an interesting choice. Perhaps to make it so they can open up the gas regulator a big more/have more tolerance for overgassing? The small gap at the end of the BCG to let stuff in is not great though... 10 shot Sub MOA accuracy before ship is amazing! Will definitely be interested to see how it performs after the warranty work. |
