Fantastic and thank you!

In your experience on the MDRx/WLVRN can you quantify what your general moa accuracy improvement is with your suppressors in each caliber?

I would say they improve significantly, though it is hard to quantify. But in general I'd say anywhere from 10 to maybe 35% improvement. I am going to continue seeing what I can get out of the WLVRN.

Much appreciated!

I know you mentioned wanting to run it with the suppressor, but would you be able to do a stock MDRx muzzle break vs stock WLVRN muzzle break test?

It looks like with suppressors the performance is about the same when compared to the rivalry videos. The suppressors may be hiding the performance improvements.

This is an excellent article with loads of details and thoughts on this platform!

Thank you for putting the time, effort, money, & energy into creating what is probably the most detailed analysis of the WLVRN to date!

I had the chance to handle a WLVRN yesterday and I was very impressed.  Lighter than I expected and that trigger is excellent.  It felt solid and the fit & finish were very good.

Hopefully I'll be adding to my collection soon.

First off, cool experimentation and adjustments, and good to learn how things work.

But to ask an unwelcomed question - I just don't understand the point and effort of going 6mmARC.  This gun shoots 5.56 class and .308 class rounds in the exact same gun, with some internal adjustments, but it's the same gun.  So it would be far easier to just convert a .308 unit to 6mm Creedmoor, which only involves a quick barrel change, and that's it.  A 6mm ARC conversion - shooting those same bullets but slower, via an exotic round - will involve a whole new custom machined bolt, as well - and that's no casual thing.  For a gun with the exact same weight as a 6mm Creedmoor version.  Why go to all that extra effort and expense to shoot a weaker version pushing the same bullet?

It's the same reason I have zero interest in a 6.5 Grendel WLVRN.  Why?  I can run it in 6.5 Creedmoor off the shelf for the exact same weight and size gun, with cheaper and more readily available ammo, pushing that exact same 6.5mm Bullet - and faster.  Or if I like, downgrade it to 6.5 Grendel power at my leisure.

I recall the author did the same thing with an MDRx, and I just don't get it.  Again, why bother going 6mmARC when you can do 6mm Creedmoor far far easier for a notably better performance gun shooting the bullet faster, in that exact same gun?

Today, in 2024 - what I want; What I really really want, is for KelTec to apply the SFAR metalurgical technology improvements to the RDB and make that in 6.5 Creedmoor - for the exact same weight and size gun the RDB is right now.  THAT would be a game-changer HUGE.

Thats pretty cool, I'd kind of imagined something like that (piping the gas into a gas block anchored at the barrel base or inside the receiver itself) But in this case it might be more than was needed.

Excellent questions and I too would prefer a 6mm Creedmoor in a package that was designed for a full sized cartridge.

As to your last statement.  If KelTec improved their QC, the RDB (as it is) and a .308 Class RDB (6.5Cm, 6CM) would own all other bullpups.  Full stop!  The downward ejection.  The more compact package and the more adjustable gas system are tits.

RDB:  Big time, not to mention the good trigger.

Back to WOVLRN (or however the Hell that's spelled), if you want one in 6mm Creedmoor, you actually can do that:
-Buy one in 6.5 Creemdoor.
-Pull the barrel and recover the barrel extension and gas system.
-Buy a 6mm Barrel blank
-Cut and chamber the 6mm blank to fit and install the gas system and barrel blank, and you're done.  I'd go 20", but in theory you can custom pick your length I suppose.  I'd also go a different profile cut - the critical breach-to-gas-block end cut design is just goofy - I'd beef that up.   Wish there was a way to move the gas port down a bit while doing all that, but that's a whole other project and I'd just let that go at this point.  (DT chose the same gas port location for .300 BO subsonic in SBR, as they did for 6.5 Creedmoor in 20".  Same spot).

The hard part being cutting the barrel blank to take all those parts, so you'll need a decent gunsmith for that part.  But that's way easier than also asking them to cut you a whole new custom bolt - that's properly heat treated and pressure rated - on top of all that as well.  Getting one to recover the parts and cut the barrel is fairly doable.  And the barrel extension and bolt are still factory and proper.

That's cool - not a problem there, so long as try to be honest.  But sure, there will be a bias.  I have bias too - it's not a big deal.  Speaking of my own bias - I still don't get why 6mmARC though vs just running 6mm Creedmoor?  Why?

I think the advantages of the 6 Arc is more in what you compare it to:

1.  6ARC doesn't burn as hot as 6Creed.  Internet says 5,000 rounds vs 2,000 rounds before the barrel starts to loose performance.
2.  Weight, the 6ARC cartridge's analog is .223 in a intermediate caliber magazine.  The Weight will be less than the 6 creed both from the brass and the magazines.
3.  Mag Pouch compatibility, Being able to fit in STANAG is more convenient than an SR25 for mag retention.
4.  Recoil, it is slightly reduced compared to 6mm arc, about 10% lower in the ARC which has its advantages.
5.  If you want to compromise #1 (and probably #4) for the ARC and have a bolt head strong enough.  Such as in a Chassis that can take 308 rated bolt heads -Hint Hint-, you can load the cartridge to bolt gun pressures and launch a 108 grain 2850 fps according to the Hornady reload spec safely.  Note, this is only about 100 fps lower than 6mm creed box ammo.

For me, I like the idea of #1.  In a Semi auto where you are shooting more than 1000 rounds a year, having a better performing .223 cartridge that doesn't eat barrels is a great advantage.  Similarly, because of the MDRX/WLVRN has larger bolts than an AR, it has the potential to be designed to take Bolt Gun pressure 6ARC for when you want to shoot competition (assuming it is accurate enough) would be a real discriminator that sets the WLVRN apart from everything else shooting 6Arc.

With these advantages listed, I think it is clear why Knights makes 6ARC guns for JSOC.

Also, another fun fact, 6MM ARC was SAMI recognized 2 years before 6MM Creed was.  So if anything 6MM Creed is more exotic than 6MM ARC is.

That being said 22Arc is probably a better choice in this space if it takes off.  Especially as it could re-use the M855A1 EPR bullets military side.

If you load both CM and ARC to 62kPSI there is a lot more than 100fps difference, everything else being equal. CM has a 10gr to 14gr larger case capacity, depending on powder choice. The ARC is pretty limited to 30gr to 31gr of slow burning ball powder. The difference is more like 250fps out of an 18" barrel. If you're using off the shelf ARC ammo, the difference is even greater.

I bet reloaders can get hotter by going over published limits.

Horandy reloading manual says 2850 fps with 31.2g of Lever Revolution 108g projectile 24" barrel for 6 Arc bolt gun.

Hornady reloading manual says 3050 fps with 41.1g RL 16.  108 grain projectile 24" barrel for 6 creedmore.

Both 11th edition.

For 6Arc, I don't think anyone sells 6Arc bolt gun ammo.  Liability of someone putting bolt gun ammo in an AR15 because they want spicy ammo is too high.  Commercial side at least.

From first hand experience, H4831 makes more steam than RL16 and H4350. RL26 really makes the speed in 6CM if you can find it.

LvrE kinda sucks. Poor accuracy, dirty, and temp sensitive. ARComp and 8208 work better but give up velocity. Tac and 2520 will be more accurate if you're ok with ball powder.

Factory 108 ELDM out of my 6CM went close to 3100fps. Prime 115 RDF went 3100fps.

The Hornady manual leaves a lot to be desired. If you're pushing both to bolt gun pressure, the difference isn't what's in the Hornady manual.

If the conversation is about factory ammo, there's a bunch of intermediate 6mm cartridges with a .473 case head. 6GT, 6XC, 6x47L, etc. Hornady announced they are producing 109 ELDM 6GT.

FWIW 6.5 Grendel/6ARC/xARC magazines are slighly lighter than PMAG SR25s in the same capacity. Even though they are steel vs polymer.

I've seen the content Desert Tech has put out for Shot, but has anyone heard if there are any significant generational changes to the WLVRN coming in 2025? Getting close to buying one.

@lazyengineer

So another updated version?   I'll probably wait as well if that's the case.

This thing is a perpetual beta test.

Giving money to DT is the height of insanity.

You're right, of course, but I've got a lot of other super reliable rifles and this thing is growing on me, little by little.  Like a fungus.

@Findsman

ETA: It is a nice "looking" rifle if nothing else.
