I was inspired to add a red dot to a shotgun so ordered a cheap Chicom mount $20 and my cheapest shotgun, a Mav 88. Tools were a 8-40 tap/drill bit set for $10, a bag of better and longer 8-40 screws $6. The first test was this: I found an Osight C red dot at the local gun show and kept with the cheap theme. The O sight is a Circle/dot which I prefer on shotguns. I am impressed with the window size, mounting assortment and packing included. It will be a torture test. I was able to sight this in fairly quickly and with the 2 moa dot was able to hit a 12” gong at 100yds with mini slugs. This is fun as a mini shell adapter will have this hold 10/11+1 shells. That was fun so I ordered some RDS mounts from GG&G which are more low profile. Nicely made and packaged, screws and tools included, about $35. Next was the Benelli Supernova:  Then today the mail brought some more GG&G RDS plates. Win 1300:  I will probably mount one on a Rem 870 next. Thanks for looking. |

The GG&G mount is super low and solid. Well priced I feel. I used a Scalar Works mount on a D&T Benelli patterned receiver. It is nice and low but at $120 I don’t want to go there. The two aluminum receivers have a ton of length on the mounting screws so little worry of backing out. The Supernova receiver I just copied the factory location and had nice purchase in the steel.  The nice part about the GG&G mount is you can install it without a dot and it is unobtrusive. |

I brought the 3 shotguns to the range and was easily able to zero the dots. The low mounting comes to the eye nicely. Using the 2 moa dot I was able to hit the 100 yd gong repeatedly. The Winchester 1300 which is my bedside gun patterned buck nicely. That has a Holosun 8 moa circle dot that Academy sports sells that always felt out of place on a handgun but I really like it in this application. I did switch the Osight to the Supernova as I like the big window vs the Holosun 507c and I will see if I can kill it. If my property is attacked by a pheasant army the family is prepared. |
