It is very likely that RI State will soon institute an "Assault Weapons Ban" written similarly to other modern "AWBs" which are pretty Draconian. Of course, we here are fighting it, and all hope is not yet lost. In the event that the AWB is enacted, my plan is to install a gas bushing which has been internally silver soldered to eliminate passage of gas through it. Others can make a plain, unvented gas bushing substitute with a lathe. I have contacted ASI about this subject, and obtaining "unvented" gas bushings is not likely. This simple and inexpensive reversible mod allows the Mini to act as a "straight-pull" carbine and completely eliminates the modified Mini from being "Registered" as an "Assault Weapon". Frankly, since I'm left-eye dominant, shooting the Mini left-handed, once accustomed to it, is actually easier and more natural than shooting "right-handed". Try it for yourself and see. I also understand that drilling and tapping the Gas piston to accept a small screw is another alternative. Prefer my approach as being simpler and less hassle. YMMV. We here in RI have been fighting AWBs since 1994, and I'm proud to be a minor part of that from then till now. We may yet succeed in preventing an AWB, but best to have a Plan "B" ahead of time. We have a "HI-Cap Magazine Ban" in place, which is before US Supreme Court. No telling if it will be accepted for review. We're fighting. I understand that moving to another State is an option, but that gets complicated both in logistics and family/friends. May I ask that you all wish us here in RI the best in our fight? |

These things will be forfeited upon conviction. Moving gun out of State means finding a trustworthy person that is reliable. A possibility, but always something of a risk. Selling it will involve financial loss at present. Have plenty of bolters. My goal is to reversibly mod the Mini so that it technically (and legally) complies with proposed AWB but can quickly be returned to original state after SCOTUS dismisses such AWBs and LCM Bans as unconstitutional. This AWB has been revised and extended to include "new" tweaks and is the Progressive model of future AWBs, as well as the model for "tweaking" existing AWBs in States suffering from such. |

I would check to see if that is even possible to do under that law. It might be one of those ATF style rules where it "once a MG, always a MG" and can not be converted. I know the mini is not a MG, but I would make sure that conversion to manual operation is legal under that new law. They might have it written that even if converted to manual operation, it is "still" a AW and illegal. A lot of these new style laws are naming specific gun makes and models. Bing "reversible" might be a issue. "constructive intent" and "readily convertible" comes to mind. Mini 14's are not a rare or uncommon gun. You might have to sell it, and then buy another one when the law is struck down. |

I agree fully that the version of the law that is enacted may differ from what is originally proposed, so I have additional "means" as backups. |

I just bought a new one. I could spend hours trying to get it out and not be successful. It's in there for ever. kwg |
