Im looking to potentially get a sr-25 in the near future if everything goes well and have a few questions. Iām not new to Kac, but no experience with the sr-25 except what Iāve read over the years. I will most likely be buying off the second hand market due to the normal product shortage. No real plans for the rifle other than pick up where my mk12 mod 1 stops. I have a nf atacr 4-16x42 itāll wear for now, not sure if itāll stay. Might grab a kac suppressor to go with it if I can afford it also. Iād like the classic look of a sopmod stock. Maybe a urx3.1 rail if I could find one already changed out and clearanceād properly, but I donāt see these pop up as much as I used to. My first question, are the upper and lower still serialized on factory complete rifles like the old ones or is that a thing of the past? If I donāt own either caliber 7.62 or 6.5 creed currently which should I go with? Iād love a dimpled barrel so that makes me lean toward the 6.5cm but thatās about the only reason. The 7.62 seems more versatile for me because of cheaper ammo with more options. But over all I have no real world experience besides shooting friends rifles a few times through the years to make an educated decision. Iāve read plenty of threads back and forth but never gathered a clear decision. Does one perform better than the other in the sr-25 platform? If I do end up with a 6.5 cm Iād prefer to grab a fde version, and being more than likely Iād buy the lower separately whatās my options on getting a fde lower? Iām assuming send it to psd or ns armor for cerakote, any idea on cost? Any updates being rolled out for the sr-25 that I should wait to buy one vs buying whatās already available? If I go 7.62 I plan to go with a 16ā upper. If I remember correctly the acc is the better choice because itās lighter and chrome lined? Is that still correct or is the apc a better choice? Iām more focused on accuracy because I doubt the rifle will be much more than a benched range toy. I know this is a rambling wall of txt just throwing a lot of thoughts out there to get opinions. My other option would be a m40a5. |
|
I shoot my 18" 5.56 out to 800 yards. What is your intended distance to use the SR-25? That will drive the caliber and barrel length. The APC is what you want for distance accuracy. The current versions have the URX6 system and the two port brake which is designed to work better with the new flow through suppressors. |
|
I live in southern ohio, there are very few ranges longer than 500 within a few hours so realistically my 5.56 can do anything I want, and our deer hunting regulations only allow straight wall cartridges so even thatās not a option. Just looking to grab a bigger caliber for fun, but in my mind itās filling the roll for when 5.56 isnāt enough. I know I asked if any updates are coming that I should wait for, I seen mention of an updated fully ambi lower with integrated trigger guard on its way but figured itās kac and that could be a few years before they are available in real numbers and obtainable for a realistic price. In a perfect world Iād build a m110 or k1 but with the difficulty and price of the suppressors and e series rifles it seems more than I want to commit. Again sorry if it seems like rambling just being as transparent as possible for the best answers. My mind is very scattered on the topic, but Iāve wanted a sr-25 for about 5 years now. |
| For 500 yards and in, I would personally go with the 16 or 20"APC/APR in .308. Yes, you'll have more recoil but also a lot more barrel life, and more energy within that range. Good luck on the search, I've been trying to buy a 6.5 upper from retail for quite some time now. Hopefully, availability of the uppers will improve in 2025. I had no problems getting both the new 5.56 and 7.62 suppressors this year. |
|
I just got an 7.62 and a 6.5 upper. The 6.5 was new and the 7.62 was used which I bought from a member here. My 7.62 is the 20ā barrel. Iām not one to go shorter than 20ā on a 7.62. The 6.5 is stupid accurate. It shoots way better than I do. The only thing about the 6.5 is it really likes Berger 140 hybrid's which are not cheap. I was told the Winchester 140 Match causes problems with this gun. Get what you want and you will be very happy. If you have any questions shoot me a PM. Daniel |
Sheep, Sheepdog or Wolf? What are you?
| One thing to keep in mind re: ammo cost, is the type of rounds youāre shooting. M80 ball will obviously be substantially cheaper and can get you out to 600 or so. However, when you compare match loads the prices are pretty similar between .308 and 6.5CM. So if youāre only looking to do closer range blasting, .308. Stretching it out, 6.5CM for sure. |

Thanks for all the responses so far. You all are pretty much saying what Iām already thinking. I like the 6.5 because of the updates and accuracy thatās been reported along with the long range capabilities if I would get the opportunity to stretch its legs. The real down side is ammo cost, especially since I donāt reload at this point or have plans to do so in the foreseen future. My understanding is it can be a bit of a barrel burner but Iām not a high volume shooter by any means. As far as the 7.62 goes itās the more practical decision and I do like the bit heavier bullet options (168 and 175 fgmm) and cheaper ammo but the non dimpled barrels and urx4 are a bit plain in comparison to the older e series rifles and newer 6.5cm offerings. That being said there is a complete 20ā apc rifle listed local for a really good price, but unfortunately thatās the model I have the least desire in. As far as the comment being directed towards the platform being outdated or better options, I realize what Iām getting into and itās what I want. I love gwot era rifles and the legacy the sr25 has. I know itās a battle rifle before itās a precision rifle. My other rifle choice if I decide against the sr25 would ge a m40a5. Also have you guys shooting the 6.5ās found and factory loads it likes besides the 140 bergers? If thatās the only thing it shoots well itāll make my choice easier based off a quick search for the price of factory ammo. |

If youāre going to pair it with a RDS or LPVO, 308 will do. If youāre going to be using it with an MPVO or higher power optic, 6.5 is the way to go. You are correct about barrel life. |

S&B 140gr 6.5cm can be found for $0.65 per round. Much cheaper even than M80 of any variety right now. Iāve shot it out to 1270 yds. Itās good ammo and inexpensive. All this to say, I would not let concern over the cost of 6.5 ammo be a hindrance to buying a rifle. |
| I was meaning if the Berger 140ās are $40 + a box and are the only ammo that preforms well compared to being able to grab pmc bronze 7.62 at $20 a box or fgmm for about $30 Iād most likely go with 7.62. Guns with really expensive ammo kill the joy of owning them for me, and I always hesitate to take them out of the safe knowing how expensive they are to feed. |

Yes, ammo price is a cost that needs to be considered. However within that 500 yards you intend to shoot, you have a lot more options to choose from other than the Berger 140's. IMO it's a waste to use the Berger's at that limited range. |
| I would go with the 16 inch APC in 308. I have one with an ATACAR 4-16 and shot it out to 600 yards on 1 MOA targets in a class at Ridgeline. The 6.5 shoots great, but the benefit is going to be beyond the distance you are shooting at. Also, the barrel life on the 6.5 is in the area of 3000 rounds. I feel like I can get to that number fairly quick. For example, I dod one class at Ridgeline this past summer, and I have another one in the spring. theres 1000-1200 rounds right there. So 2 classes eat up 1/3 of my barrel life. Now how much your groups will open up as the barrel life degrades is un known. But if you start losing accuracy as you get to the point that your barrel is shot out, good luck getting a new barrel from KAC... Just my thoughts. |
| I can't answer all your questions. But I'll just say I have the 14.5 CC and the new KAC suppressor (whatever it's called). It's by far my favorite gun to shoot. I wouldn't appreciate it if I didn't spend a lot of time shooting guns, as it's certainly in the land of diminishing returns. But I'm at the point where I can really appreciate the subtleties. And if I could only keep one, this would be it. The only thing I'd change is I wish I had a shorter suppressor. It slows down an other wise very nimble platform. |

I think these last few post have really help narrow my decision with solid feedback. As much as I want the urx6 and a dimpled barrel of a 6.5cm I just donāt think 6.5cm is for me the more I weigh my options. I went to a shop yesterday looking to hold a large frame ar with a bit longer barrel and the closest I could find was a scar 20. The length and weight made me realize the gun would never be shot from the shoulder at all and that was before adding any accessories. So now I know if I purchase one it will be a 16ā (maybe a 14.5 if I found the right deal) 7.62, but do I want a apc or acc? Like I mentioned earlier Iād love to find something already swapped to a urx3.1 but I donāt see them on the market near as much as I used to. But Iām in no hurry to buy and have plenty of time to shop. |

Like I mentioned earlier Iād love to find something already swapped to a urx3.1 but I donāt see them on the market near as much as I used to. But Iām in no hurry to buy and have plenty of Ā time to shop. APC vs ACC really depends on what type of shooting you like to do. I don't shoot for groups much, so lighter guns make more sense. The ACC handles like a small frame in hand, and is simultaneously rugged. It's really a phenomenal combo. The groups on ACC will open up a little bit when the barrel gets hot (compared to the APC) due to the ACC being a thinner profile. I can't quantify the amount, just know it's probably going to happen to some extent. I noticed this on a 16" ACC I had. The chrome lining on the CC theoretically reduces accuracy as well compared to the APC, but I don't shoot well enough to discern this difference alone. My 14.5CC is a laser beam and more accurate than me. I'd say for the average shooter that I see, the APC probably makes most sense, as most guys like to sit at a bench. The APC makes a great DMR and can still be fired from the standing position. The ACC is a bit more "jack of all trades master or none". However if you find you enjoy shooting on the move like I do, and need to lug something around hunting in the woods etc, the ACC wins. |
|
Yea from memory I think Jack said the accuracy between the apc and acc are so close that it really comes down to the weight and how fast the barrel heats up. If your chasing accuracy then the apc is the choice but for anything else the acc is the best choice especially with the chrome lined barrel. And the velocity is so close between the 14.5 and 16 to get the 14.5 if you can. Iād like to think Iād use it more running and gunning but itāll probably spend more time on a bipod / tripod than being carried and shouldered. Iām sure any of the three will suite me fine watching videos of people running, gunning and mag dumping sure makes my pants tight! I do plan to get a kac suppressor for it and will most likely spend most of its life suppressed so cutting weight and going with the acc probably makes the most sense. Optics wise I have a nf atacr 4-16x42 it might wear for now but I donāt know if it would be permanent. If it is an offset rmr or rds of some sort will probably be in order. Iām thinking I might try a qd atlas bipod, all my experience currently is with Harris. Not sure on a light or not at this point. Weāll see how it goes. |
| Thatās a great looking stick! I curious which suppressor you prefer? Now that Iām pretty well settled on a 16ā gun Iām rethinking if Iād want a 4-16 power nf on it. The weight might kill the feel of the rifle, maybe something similar to what your running is in store. |

The s&b 140gr 6.5cm actually performs very well, better truly than pmc 7.62 and less costly. |

Thanks for the tip. Just to clarify are you referring to 7.62 or 6.5? Iāve stared shooting a decent bit of s&b in my wifeās 300blk and Iāll say Iām pretty impressed with it, especially compared to other cheaper offerings. Attached File Itās got a bit of kac goodness on it. |

I prefer the CQB as itās a tad bit more compact and does the job of taking the concussion away, I always wear hearing protection. The reason Iām thinking of going bigger magnification is the weight penalty is barely over .5 pound and donāt think that would bother me too much. |

Cool Thatās what I was thinking as well with the cqb. Iām more concerned with weight and size, than chasing dbās. As far as the mrgg goes I honestly had to google it yo see what your referring to. G makes a solid product so Iām sure itās a fine rifle. But for me the only ar10 style rifle Iām interested in the sr25. For the prices these go for if I was looking at anything else it would be a bolt gun from Gap most likely. |

I'd get an APC/PC, I wish I had. The APR/PR is a pig. A lower recoil, accurate pig though. My ACC is much better to move around with, though much less accurate (group wise) than my APR. *I didn't get a death ray ACC, though lots of people have. Mine shoots just over an inch with match ammo. Perfectly acceptable. |
|
Yeah my 16ā ACC wasnāt insanely accurate either (acceptable though). My 14.5 CC however is indeed a death ray. Regarding the optics discussion. After going through a lot of high end lpvo/mpvoās, the NF 4-16 is the only that iāve ever been completely happy with. Just a phenomenal purpose built optic that doesnāt compromise in an effort to do everything. |

It totally depends on your intentions of use and length of ranges around you. Being in Florida I don't have access to a lot of long distance ranges, but being the typical KAC junkie I had all of the SR25 URX 4 variants (ACC, APC and APR) except for the 6.5cm (Definitely NOT needed here...lol). I had the ATACR 4-16x50 on both the APC and APR along with the ATACR 1-8x on my ACC. As I was typing this I forgot I also had the LPR Mod 2 with another ATACR 4-16x50. The rifles were really set up. Please don't take the above as being pompous. I'm trying to point out these suckers were ready to shoot, and shoot well! After having all of them for several years, I never shot the APR or the LPR and rarely shot the APC. If memory serves I had 360 or so rounds down that barrel. I am by no means a KAC collector. In other words, I enjoy shooting their rifles, not just to sit around in the safe. So I sold all three of those to members here who are shooting them and kept the ACC for when I wanted a .308 blaster or wanted to reach out further than my other 5.56 Mod 2's. Even as it is the ACC is not really practical for my area but wanted to keep at least one SR25. Now if I lived out in Utah or some place where the desert was my oyster, I would have kept them all and added the 6.5cm. Regarding the ammo choice, that is personal preference, again with what you intend to do with the rifle. I would personally choose 7.62 as it's more widely available, last I checked cheaper to some degree (it's been a while), and you'd have barrels last longer. However, if I wanted to shoot at longer ranges, less recoil, better BC (if memory serves 6.5cm begins surpassing 7.62 around the 500 yard mark in terms of BC (fact check that)) and you didn't care about sourcing more frequent KAC barrels/uppers, then I would choose the 6.5cm. If you have "KAC patience" for new stuff to become available I'd wait if you're willing to see what they come out with. However, you can't go wrong with a current SR25. My ACC has been nothing short of awesome. The same goes for the Mod 2 5.56's as well! You could get a current SR25 until the new stuff becomes available. The good thing about KAC stuff is they hold their value well so I would doubt you'd lose a lot of money, if any at all if you decided to upgrade later. I hope this helps. |

15 years ago, KAC was the large frame AR/ 308 gas gun. Fast forward to today, that's not so much the case for a number of reasons (Line up and availability). The reality is you can talk about what may want, but unless that's a 16 inch 308 APC, you're probably not going to get it. you may be able to track down a 22 inch 6.5cm upper, but that are generally on show up on gunbroker for the same retail price as complete rifles. Its not like you can say, sent I want to order an CC upper, just send it out when they come in stock. Everything is basically on the drop system, and unless you are really tuned into all of the various community groups and are literally prepared to bang the debit card at 3AM, its not happening. Geisselle, LMT, Seekins, Noveske, HK, and FN all make killer 308/6.5CM gas guns and have far better selection and availability. Life is way too short to fuck around waiting for 36 months or longer for some random 3AM parts drop to complete your build. |
