I think I want of these...family shooting contest was 9mm PCCs and it was a blast...that said, have heard that the magazines on the Colt are a problem?   Anybody have any insights on the 9mm Colt?

I would not hesitate to buy the Colt 9mm.  The mags are sturdy, and somewhat expensive.

9mm ARs are a lot of fun, but they can have an occasional failure to feed or failure to eject...

The failures to eject tend to be an incorrectly adjusted ejector and easy to fix by bending the ejector slightly into place.  I have put together a rifle and bought one.  Neither were Colt's.  Both needed a slight tweak to the ejector when I acquired them years ago and haven't needed any adjustment since over thousands of rounds...

The occasional failure to feed can be from the relatively long distance between the magazine and the chamber compared to purpose built 9mm designs.

I thoroughly enjoy them, but wanted you to know that they are not always as reliable as their 5.56 counterparts.  9mm is great for close range target practice or shooting steel and is around half the cost of 5.56.  I plan on turning one into a suppresser host...

For colt pattern magazines, Metalform probably makes the best mags...

Old RRA version but no problems with Colt or Metalform magazines.  The metal magazines will have two indentions at the top, on the Colt and Metalforms that are unequal lengths, and for whatever reason, they seem to work fine while the ASC, C Products, etc have equal length indentions and they're less reliable for most people.  I've never bothered to actually figure out why, it's just something I keep in the back of my mind when I run across magazines that aren't in the package, i.e. at gunshows back when I used to go to them.

Skip the direct blowback and go with a delayed PCC like the stribog or kuna.
Run smoother, suppress better.

I like the Colt

Mine has a 10.5”barrel and a Macon Armory dead blow buffer.
I use Metalform 20 and 32 round mags.
Great little rifle. Keep it loaded with 147gr bonded jhp.

I prefer the CMMG FE (Fixed Ejector) delayed blowback setup.
As you can see in the picture below, the ejector is bolted into position in the upper so there are no alignment issues like you have with a straight blowback 9mm AR with adjusting the ejector in the lower.  Being delayed blowback, an OOBD is just about impossible since the bolt must rotate inside the extension for the proper amount of FP protrusion.

Sometimes you want a certain gun just because you want it- I've always figured "just for fun" was as valid an excuse to buy another gun as any other reason (once you've got something you can carry every day taken care of).  I would have bought mine even if other 9mm guns were more common when I bought it, just because I wanted it; if I were looking for an AR style 9mm today I'd strongly consider the H&R DOE gun, just because they're cool.  That or Mike's gray 635.  I'll be the first to admit that there are better options these days if I were going to war with a 9mm, but mine's been reliable enough, both suppressed and unsuppressed, that I wouldn't feel handicapped by the gun, only the caliber, obviously preferring a rifle caliber for social work.

As Ol Painless says, "Shooting stuff is fun".

I have a bunch of 9mm carbines, then shot my Uncle’s home built 9mm AR.  I thought it was really fun to shoot so I bought the Colt and was happy shooting it the one time I shot it.

I also had a Tavor 9mm that takes the same mags and never had a problem with the mags.

Kuna is a nice gun, but not perfect. I wish it had a slightly longer handguard, not a lot of room for my hand. Also the brace kinda sucks. Now if you sbr it , that’s different.
I have the Colt and a scorpion sbr. The scorpion is a small pkg but I think the Kuna is even more compact.

The Colt OEM mags are made by Metalform. Those and other Colt pattern mags are available much cheaper by other magagazine manufacturers like ASC or Duramag.
I've been battling some internal demons this week, so far I'm 0 for 6.

I have the PSA Arv. It takes the scorpion mags. It does have a bullet ramp.

I added the Maxim roller delayed buffer. Runs great and the recoil is much lower. They have you take out the bolt weight.

The recoil now is lower that the Kuna which I also have. Much easier now to get back on target after a shot.

I own one and love it. No issues. Colt 9mm 32 round straight mags look great in it.

Ive since changed the optic to a Sig Romeo 7 but otherwise thats it.

Sighted it in at 25 yards with the Romeo 7 1 inch group EASY at 25 yards. Hitting steel at 100 yards easy also.

If you want it get it! Get 4-5 mags and don't forget to get a magazine loader, your thumbs will thank you.

I run it suppressed now, no issues.

Thanks for sharing your insights.... picked up the carbine today, fit and finish looks good.   Will zero the irons at 25 yards and then get a red dot...anyone have a recommendation on a red dot optic?

Romeo5 gen2 in green, holosun 510 are both good without breaking the bank.
Aimpoint, EOTech  and Trijicon MRO if you have the coin.
For mags  Metalform from Greg cote llc.
Just so you know the damn 10 round mag will be the most expensive.

I really liked my Colt, shot well.  I ended up trading it but I have been toying with the idea of getting another, but it really does need to be SBR'd.  I have been keeping an eye on AU to see if any Colt 10.5 uppers show up.

I've got two of these rifles.  The first is a home build with a colt bolt and Hahn precision drop in magwell adapter.  It's got a 4.5 or 5 inch barrel if memory serves.  Originally was a jammomatic with a PSA bolt and magwell adapter.  Works fine after changing to higher quality parts.   The short barrel with silencer under the handguard is a nice package.

The other is a factory Colt SBR with a 10.5 inch barrel (model LE6991 I think).  Haven't even shot it but had it for years now.  Really like the looks of it.

I've had a factory colt carbine for a few years now.
Zero issues.
I only use converted UZI mags since I have 4 UZI's one being a transferable.

Only draw back is no last round hold open if that bothers you.
Doesn't bother me at all since my transferables are not LRBHO a few other guns are designed like that from the factory.

The magazines are quite good, it's the ejectors that are a little finnicky. They need to be "tuned" properly.

I have a spikes  AR lower with a Spikes 9mm adapter and buffer. I have both Spikes 32 round mags as well as Colt mags.

The Spikes mags short stroke occasionally and the Colt mags always short stroke. Now the new round gets loaded, but the trigger doesn't get

reset. Anyone have this issue before?

ETA: It has a 10 1/2" barrel

I’ve got a non-fixed ejector cmmg rdb colt mag gun.

The three major concerns of the Colt mag pattern are:

1) that they get stiff to load by hand after only a couple of rounds. A loading tool is your friend.

2) if you drop the mags while loaded, they’ll usually spit up a few to several of the loaded rounds. Kind of annoying in match settings.

3) Bolt forward reloads can take some force. I put magpuls on my mags and a magwell on my gun, and keep it my head to feed it hard.

I like the aesthetic of the Colt mag pattern more than the Glock mag. I can’t speak to any of the new designs except that I’ve got a LMT PDW RDB on a KP-15 that I use with Endo/Exomags.

I’ve used both Colt/Metalform and ACS mags, and I haven’t noticed a difference. Because both of mine are rdb pattern, I use the 10mm-spec extra power ejector spring and change it every 2kish rounds.

I like my 9mm AR. I have just a few Colt mags.  But plenty of Metalform I got from J&G Surplus during a Christmas sale for $10. That was for both 32rd and 20rd mags.
A few of the Metalform mags, the follower would drag and cause a miss feed. I took a few of the mags apart and saw that the follower had a large parting line on the front of the follower that caused the drag. I took an Exacto knife and trimmed the followers on 2 of the mags and fired them the next range trip. No malfunctions at all. When i got home, I disassembled all the Metalform mags and trimmed the parting lines on the followers. Every one of them function 100% now.

I have a couple of ASC mags also. They work no problems at all.

@DuneShoot

What mag is that? Would it work in a dedicated 9mm lower like my DDLES lower?

It's a Pro Mag drum. Came with it when I bought it. It actually works well.
I would think it'd work with any lower that takes Colt stick mags.

I wasn't looking for one, but I picked up this one because I thought it was a good price. Will probably sent it to JT for a bbl chop. I'll replace the Magpul handguards with factory Colt.

I built a 4" AR Colt-style SBR 20 years ago.

Other guns have come and gone, but I held onto it.  It's fun to shoot, and suppresses really well.

I played around with different buffer weights to reduce the gas to the face since I'm left handed.  I added a gas shield that helps.

It won't run 115's with a heavy buffer,  but switching to a standard carbine buffer allows light projectiles.  I usually run 147's and a  suppressor 96% of the time.  I had really good results with an old school RRB (Rate Reducing Buffer) from MGI.

Mags haven't ben an issue for me.  I have several brands and they all run fine but skip the junky polymers.  I ave a mix of C Products, Duromax, Colt and ASC.

Get a loader or your fingers will get sore.

I have a 10mm Stribog and a MKE AP5P too., but I still like the AR.  Kel-Tec, Scorpions, didn't make a great impression on me.
