Looks like they did some extensive testing and will start using drill receivers.

I hope the prices are commensurate with that.

Edit after reading the link.

No discount and will be mixed with the regular rifles that weren’t welded and reworked.   No choice.  Best bet would be to look for yourself in store and look for irregular finishes in the front ring.

They’re probably not that bad as they’re doing a pretty thorough proof and magnetic particle inspection.   It still unnerves me a bit.

Paying full shot for that is also not fair in my book.  Granted these salvaged drill rifles cost more to get them ready for sale.
The only hyphenated names I like are cartridge names......30-06, 30-40, 38-55 etc.

Better than no rifles. I'm actually looking forward to the new production receivers they were teasing.

I think that's a great idea, and I'm glad they spent the time and money to do the testing.

The part I don't like:

Receivers that pass wet MPI and final gauging feed directly into CMP’s standard Service, Field, and Expert grade rifle production. They are not labeled, priced, or warrantied differently from current offerings as assembly procedures, quality assurance, and safety inspections remain unchanged. CMP maintains that each of these products is of equal quality and safety, regardless of receiver provenance, and will extend no offer to further identify units associated with the project.

Glad CMP is finding new ways to support its operation. On the flip side, this worries me as an indication that serviceable surplus rifles are running extremely low in quantities. CMP will need to find new source of revenues after 1903 & M1 drill rifles ran out. All the new stuff are machine guns and never will be offered, except for parts. Maybe next up will be M9 if they can get another authorization like 1911? But no more rifles...

I personally think they should be a separate grade but I am happy they are getting used.

Would love to see these modern testing techniques applied to a sample set of the "early serial number" Springfield 1903's.

Maybe an NDT procedure could be developed to evaluate and approve those receivers for regular use.

Given CMP’s caution with the Mod 0s and the low number 03s, I think it’s reasonable to say that they’re very confident in this project.

I'm glad they're doing it but not pleased about mixing them with non-recovered receivers and charging the same price. They should be a separate category and labeled as such with a cheaper price to go with it. Only way I'd buy one now is if I pick it out myself.

It's one thing to reactivate a drill rifle for myself, it's another for CMP to do it and sell them as equals to regular rifles.

They should sell them as what they are now, drill rifles. For what drill rifles sell for, they would make more money and have no labor or parts into them.

Not a chance, especially after what CMP is doing with them. The drill rifles I saw in a JROTC outfit were complete mix masters.

Since the barrels have been cut and welded and the bolt faces welded, those are 2 pretty big main parts that will be replaced.  They will have to have new production stocks.  The majority of drill rifle stocks are cracked and beat up.
I’d guess these are going to be like the expert grade Garands.  New barrels and stocks.  Probably new production rear sights and a few other parts.   These should be excellent for shooting CMP matches.

That’s exciting they’re getting more functioning rifles in circulation. But those should be a different criteria - even if the price is the same. If I were receiving one, I’d want to know up front.

Many people have voiced this to the CMP, and today’s email from them states they are going to change the listings and certificates to show if they are a reclaimed receiver.

I’m still awaiting 2 I ordered middle of May, so hoping they are not reclaimed receivers, but honestly they are probably better condition than some of the pitted ones from the Philippines.

It’s completely different.

Reweld means they welded two halves of a demilled receiver back together. That has the potential for all kinds of issues with regards to alignment, dimensions, and strength. These reclaimed rifles just had a tack weld applied to lock the drill barrel into the receiver. The only concern is strength and cosmetics. They have ways to test for the former and aren’t concerned about the latter.

Are you sure about that?  Have you actually carefully read the CMP descriptions of how their reclamation process works, or are you just shooting from the hip?  I don't really want one either, but I did read their article and it's clear these "reclaimed" drill rifles are not just another "reweld".  These aren't sixties era rewelded scrap.  The process is state of the art, even if some M1 collectors, accumulators, hoarders, speculators and throw-backs out there prefer to remain ignorant and believe otherwise.

Lots of opinions over on the CMP forums. Most are pleased that the CMP reversed itself and will distinguish between RC and non-RC. It didn't satisfy them all, but you can't
make everyone happy no matter how hard you try. Tough crowd over there.

I'm sure the RC rifles are safe and fine shooters, and I'd bet they have some real gems they've acquired over the years. I read somewhere someone who volunteered there
claimed they had collected over 10,000 turn in drill Garands. It will be interesting to see what they ship once more pictures start making their way out onto the broader Internet.

It always puzzled me though that for a long time drill rifles were almost as expensive as Field grades and priced very close to Rack grades. I never understood why someone
wouldn't just spend $100-$150 more and get a functioning rifle, even if it was intended to be a wall hanger? Just remove the firing pin if you had safety concerns?

I was fortunate to put my little collection together when the CMP was shipping some really nice Garands. I lurked on the forums and watched conditions slip a little over the years.
Today's Service grade was yesterday's Field grade sort of thing. So, I have no interest in an RC, but I hope the guys who take the chance are happy with what they get.

They should have at least one SA-52 drill rifle.  We turned it in to the Army several years ago.  It was a former M1C receiver that had the holes plugged and built as a regular M1.

I was down in Alabama for one of the AMC classes and during the tour asked why they started using reclaimed receivers.  The armorer flat out said they were out of receivers.  I then asked how long the stock of reclaims would last and he said two years.

They were very open about the process and testing as well as the challenges.  Same with their new production receivers, they are working hard to get them right.

In 1989 we carried drill M1's in Navy boot camp.  140 per floor in the barracks. Three floors per barrack and dozens of barracks.

Most of the ones I saw were pretty much WWII configured with just the bolt and barrel welded. Most all of them had lockbars and single slot gas plugs.  Most did not have the gas cylinder welded either.

I was assigned bright work as my barracks job.  But since it was a simple job, I became friends with the guys who were assigned to the rifle racks.  Even showed them how to pop out the trigger group.

Silly but the drill rifles had a welded rod up the chamber.  This just doubled the prevention of a barrel swap to the military admin eyes.

Plug welder in chamber, bolt face welded to plug firing pin channel, barrel welded to receiver and sometimes gas cylinder welded on barrel.   In that manner the army felt comfortable to loan them to college rotc for drilling and such.

Thanks for the inside information. I hate to hear they are out of receivers, but we all knew that day was coming. Kind of reminds me of when Orest told the forum members once the Spam cans of HXP went back on
sale that meant the end of the ammo was near. The Spam cans dried up in the summer of 2016 and they were basically out of the cheap surplus M2 ball less than a year later.

The price they’re at is reasonable. A brand new forged receiver is an expensive thing to tool for and make.

Speaking of, ….. I was going thru the dark recesses of a small safe I hadn’t opened in a while and found two of those old stripped “Grade C” M1 receivers wrapped up in storage paper. CMP used to sell those back in the day at the NS.

Forgot I had them.  …. What are those going for now?

Are those cosmetically different from the Grade C receivers?

ETA: if I recall correctly, the Grade C stripped receivers were deemed ‘Service Grade’ receivers by CMP, at least back when they were still selling them.

Were those the ones that had mild pitting and were refinished? I remember buying several of them to throw in the closet. They were dirt cheap.

No, these are the receivers they’re reclaiming off drill rifles right now. They are reparked and will have some discoloration where the tack welds for the barrels were removed.

Given that it’s been many years since CMP offered stripped receivers and they’re twice that cost elsewhere, $325 is a steal.

Coincidentally I found the receipt for the two Plainfield M1 carbine receivers Orest sold me years ago for $50 a pop.

Probably not listed for sale on the Website. No mail order? They sell stuff in the stores that is in-store only. As I understand it they bring it out and prepare it for sale before opening
for the week. At least that's what I've gathered from the store reports that are posted on their forums.

Years ago a member posted a picture of his Garands. He had them set up in his front yard using the stacking swivels.

Here's my newly acquired reclaimed Field Grade and 2 reclaimed receivers.

Couple notes: The welds vary rifle by rifle (many just on the bottom, some on the top, some on the sides) and some of them take park while some of them did not. The receivers are all otherwise in much nicer shape than most of the Phillipine batch were.

Certificates are marked reclaimed. Although some are militant about wanting CMP to stamp the receivers themselves, I contend that the M1 noob will have no idea what to look for while anyone who even takes a cursory glance at the receiver will know it was reclaimed (it's really f***ing obvious even on mine, which I handpicked).

I dug through the fields at both of the stores in Alabama today.  There are some nice units hiding on the racks!   I picked up 2 springers and 2 H&R’s today as they are decently nice units and should help with some really pitted dogs from a while back that are disasters under the wood.

As a side,  the barreled units are a good deal when you consider coat of receiver, barrel, bolt.

As far as complete rifles.  These remind me of when the MK2 Mods showed up.  There were some legit good parts on rifles and some
Very correct old units in the Mod 0 rifles. Some good old barrels, low ME/TE I saw a lot of 1/2’s  2/2’s etc.

Those receivers look a-okay to me.

There are several characteristics of metallic "structures" which cannot be assessed by simply looking at the item.

These include dimensions and tolerances, temperature stability and long-term fatigue life.

CMP must have addressed the initial dimensions and tolerances before committing to this project.  Am I right about that?  Certainly, they have the tool, gauges and inspection equipment.

What happens when the welded receiver gets really hot, or really cold, does it still conform to the dimensional requirements which includes things like straightness (does it warp or bow)?

Do the receiver welds stretch or deform in any way that's different from the rest of the receiver?

Do the welds have the same fatigue life as the rest of the receiver?

Ever hear any discussion of this by CMP?

My guess is that it’s been covered but I haven’t dug and probably won’t dig into it.  I’m assuming at some point recently the GCA magazine probably covered it but I never open those when they come so who knows.   The only real issue I could see is if they didn’t clear the weld off properly making it a real bust on clocking a barrel.  A good smith wouldn’t have any issues but a home gamer would.  The one B receiver has me suspecting that because the receiver has marks from being in a barreling tool.
