Last July at the National Matches at Camp Perry I picked up a real nice Winchester Expert Grade in 308. Already have a couple M-1s in '06 and a ton of 308 ammo so I picked up something "different" Will be heading back to Camp Perry in July and again will be looking for another M-1 -- maybe. They are not getting any cheaper ! I know CMP has a stock of M-1s in inventory but sooner or later the supply will be exhausted. Anyone have any idea on how many M-1s are at CMP - and how many they sell per month ? Thanks ! |

I'm looking into my first purchase late spring. I have a nice Winchester M1 Carbine that wants a big brother. My Dad (81) and I are making a trip south to pick up a trailer down south and are planning to swing by the CMP South store. I am reseaching what to look for. Kinda of looking for something just neat and shootable or something that is a little better at shooting and be happy for a piece of history (I know the right answer is both with a side of an extra). Working on making sure my paperwork in order. Mike PS A tag to learn more. |

There has to be millions of arms and ammo still stored in various countries that need to come home. |

Was not aware the CMP was considering new manufactured receivers - but did know Faxon was going to make new M-1 barrels for CMP. The rifle I purchased last July has a new manufactured “CMP” marked gas cylinder. Last July during the National Matches the CMP North Store had a really nice selection of M-1s - along with a few Springfields and Krags. And they were selling a LOT of rifles ! Hopefully I’ll be at Camp Perry in July and will be looking for another M-1 to bring home 😊 |

I'm not usually envious, but let me tell you, we drug a buddy of ours with us, who is recently retired ANG and he asked what he'd need to buy there. When they told him he needed his DD214 and (I think) an ID, he went nuts. Bought 2 of the nicer Garands, 2 M1917s, and registered for a match to get a M1903. Also bought a couple of cases of ammo. It was one hell of a haul. I expect they'll stock the North store well for the National Matches again this year and for the foreseeable future, so long as they can. Come late spring/summer, it's the CMP's priority. |

Those M1 Rifles and M1 Carbines in Korea used to be in the news several years ago from time to time. Political and practical reasons they haven't migrated back to the US were varied. Last I remember is the stockpile was, in fact, weapons the South Korean government purchased from the US under Foreign Military Sales programs. I remember the CMP was interested in purchasing them and went so far as to dispatch a team to South Korea for discussions and inspection. No purchases came of the effort, reportedly because the overall condition of the stockpile didn't merit the price tags the Koreans were holding out for. I doubt CMP has totally given up on them, but who knows? |

We sent a million carbines to SE Asia, fewer Garands. God knows if they still exist or what condition they would be in. |

They’re a bit fungible so iirc they already gave back some of the most worn out ones, most likely irrespective of the program they were bought or borrowed on. They also sold a bunch in the old days…..the Blue Sky imports of the eighties. |
The only hyphenated names I like are cartridge names......30-06, 30-40, 38-55 etc.

Due to political considerations I doubt we will ever see any of these. People that have visited Vietnam have published pictures of piles of M1’s rusting in the open in junkyards. The tropical climate is kind. A significant number of Philippine M1’s were beyond recovery as was the case when some efforts were made years ago to recover some items from central and South America. Roughly 6 million made, lord knows how many sunk in supply ships on the way to Europe, were destroyed in combat beyond repair, and millions more went through captain crunch as well. World wide sources are indeed drying up, but trickles here and there will continue the supply for some time. No one knows what that will be. The older bolt guns like 1903’s, 1917’s and Krags still trickle in from time to time also, and I would’ve bet these were not going to be available again like they are. |

The new manufactured rifles will be great. They will definitely appeal to a certain type of shooter. That is once they start making the small parts using MIM instead of milling everything. Still, nothing beats a new "expert grade" with a mix of new manufacture and original parts, a new commercial barrel and stock set, all refinished with whatever history the rifle had, bleached out and erased. Perfect to LARP with as you re-watch "Band of Brothers" on Hulu. |

I'm glad CMP is doing something with the incomplete guns so that more people can enjoy them. |
