Magtech M80   50 rds - 2 stoppages
PMC .308 147gr   60 rds - 3 stoppages
Win M80            40 rds - 2 stoppages

For you Garand gurus:
S/N 5,9xx,xxx  (would not have the early production issue of the left guide area being machined low).

I have put in a new recoil spring and clip latch spring.  I have loaded the clips with top round on the left (2 stoppages of the 7) and the right.
I only loaded left round up on my most recent range trip - 20 rds PMC and 20 rds Win M80.   Give or take a stoppage every 20 rds so far.

I have owned a .30-06 M1 for 20 years and never had this happen once.  Not a Garand expert, but really liked shooting mine and wanted a .308.
Used to shoot the 06 M1 in vintage club matches for years before my GI ammo got low.    I am going swap the bullet guide and follower arm from my -06 on my next range trip.  Watching a YT video it looks like the steel spacer is a little taller than the plastic one.   Since it is always the 7th round in the clip, I tried to see if the last round sliding too far forward in the clip and causing the malfunction.  Can't really tell.

My plan was to put an Ultimak on this and hog hunt with it.  Would the steel spacer even do anything?

Try removing the spacer - it isn't needed.

I've never ran a spacer in my Navy .308. No issues. Are your clips tensioned correctly and not loose and worn out? How securely do they hold the rounds?
Liberals are a curious mix of communism and fascism, they want to destroy you but want to use your own money to do it.

I'm getting down to the last box, the others have all been destroyed...

They are not loose.  Kind of a PITA to load.  Three hands would make it easier.

I will lose the space next trip.

I'll chime in .......

Currently have four M-1 rifles - two expert grade 308s, one expert grade in 30-06 and one service grade in 30-06.   Must go thru 500-600 rounds a year.  Been shooting the M-1 for 30 years.  I have never had any problems with any rifle as long as they are properly lubed and feed good ammo - a lot of it surplus - and good USGI clips.

That all being said - the spacer has nothing to do with the feeding of a loaded round.  The bullet tip never touches the spacer.  Sole purpose of the spacer is to keep you from loading a clip loaded with 30-06 ammo into a rifle chambered in 308.  Good USGI clips have enough tension to hold the shorter round in the correct position.

Question:  are you using USGI clips ?  The "new" commercial clips are hit and miss.  Is the rifle properly lubed ?

Suggestion:  take a Sharpie and number your clips.  When you go to the range keep track of what clips are giving you a problem.  Are you loading the top round on the right ?   If so and you are still having problems, try loading the top round on the left.

Try this before you start spending $$$ on new parts.  Just my 2 cents .......

The last range trip I did load on the left, but still had stoppages.  I have used GI clips for 2/3 of the rounds and have marked them.  I used four AEC new mfg clips on the first outing and then switched to my surplus ones.  Only one GI clip, that looked more heavily park'd than the others, has not had a stoppage.  I cleaned and lubed it when I received it.   Appreciate your 2c.

Question:  have you tried the “tilt test”

Remove op rod spring and install action back into the stock.  Handguards and gas cylinder are in place.

Tilt the rifle up and down at a 45 degree and several times.  Action should be cleaned and lubed. The action should cycle by the weight of the op rod and bolt.  If not then you have something binding in the stock, op rod or gas cylinder.

If I understand the op, load a clip in to the chamber a round and it fired one but the second does something?

If accurate my expert 308 I just got is doing the same thing. First round fires, second round does not chamber, not jams it does not even pick the round up and try. It then runs fine the rest of the clip. I am going try the rest of the clips I have and just see if its the clips or the gun. Mine is properly lubed and cleaned, just did it last night.

I have a whopping 40 rounds thru it, might need breaking in, might be broken.

On a plus note I did go 50% on a 12 inch plate at 400 yards.

I will try that test when I get back in town.

Rifle passed the tilt test before I hit the range.  I went through 20 rds of Federal XM80, 20 rds of Winchester M80, 8 rds of PMC and 6 rds of Norma 150gr .308.  I had zero 7th round stoppages.  Only issue I had was with 3 rds of the Winchester M80 and it would not extract/eject at all.
(The ammo was deep discounted at a local farm/ranch store and I had problems with some rounds being lightly loaded - functioned in my Galil 308, but had the same issue in my AR10 and a buddy's AR10.  It started out at $10 a box and got down to $5 when they were clearing it out).

I don't claim to know what I did, but I had ordered the steel spacer from Fulton and put that in and my friend (he's really into Garands) had me use his thumb saver device that replaces the military op rod catch (I call it a clip catch, but was told the other name).  He uses it to load rounds into the clip while it is still in the gun.  You don't get the last round clip ejection as he used it in some kind of match.  To eject the clip you hit the button on the left side of the receiver.

I planned to bring my 30-06 Garand to do some part swaps at the range to narrow down the issue, but ended up forgetting the -06 Garand and some other stuff.  My buddy thinks it's the op rod catch, since the Thumb Saver seemed to have done the trick on the 7th rd stoppage.  Next range trip I will install one from my -06 and try again.

I attended a CMP M-1 sanctioned match 2 weekends ago.  A friend of mine also attended the match and he had completed the CMP M-1 Advanced Armorer Clinic last fall (you get to build your very own M-1 and you take it home with you )  I ran your problem past him and he suggested that you purchase a NOS bullet guide.  Although the bullet nose never touches the bullet guide the "leg" can become worn which will effect the timing of the rifle.  Stay away from "surplus" parts and try to find a NOS part.

Hope this helps - or maybe you have already solved the problem.  Please keep us posted.  TIA !

Interesting.   I might grab my -06 and use from it.
